#Microbotryum
It has been a smutty day.

We've seen lots of Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae (Campion Anther Smut) on White Campion flowers.

Our prime target was Microbotryum on Rabelera holostea, which I suspect is a different species to M. stellariae sensu stricto on Stellaria graminea. We found it in abundance.

Campion Anther Smut, Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae, infecting the stamens of a White Campion flower.

I've cropped the photo (second picture) to show the Speckled Bush-cricket nymph (Leptophyes punctatissima) on the central flower.

In 2023 I painted Microbotryum anther smut, caused by the fungi within the genus Microbotryum (formerly Ustilago).

I've done it! I've released one plant disease painting a week, every week, for an entire year!

My favourite paintings from 2023 are: Microbotryum, Coffee Rust, Fusarium Head Blight and
Wheat Stem Rust.

A #MondayMiscellany - a Common Red Damselfly (unless I’m corrected) with a damaged wing, a blackcurrant-like gall? on Oak, and Silene anther smut fungus Microbotryum silenes dioicae. Only one flower affected on this plant but total takeover on some.

Just identifying images from the summer, and found this. Tragopogon Smut Microbotryum tragopogonis-pratensis on Salsify on the Ferry Marsh seawall, Wivenhoe. Seemingly not recorded before in Essex.

I was extremely pleased to refind Microbotryum coronariae on Ragged Robin today at Lagan Meadows with @jalcorn536.bsky.social . This is a rare species which I last saw here in 2020 – every year since, I have been busy with exams around this time.

For the #pinkfamily challenge for #wildflowerhour I have opted for a species associated with Red Campion, Silene dioica: Campion Anther Smut fungus, Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae. Found on male flowers. Infected plants have brownish-mauve anthers due to fungal spores.

Anther #smut fungus on sea campion (#Silene uniflora) likely caused by #Microbotryum silenes-inflatae (Pointe du Grouin, FR).
