Noa & Una’s Marginalia 📜 Soapwort

In the Middle Ages, soap wasn’t something that could be mass-produced like it is today. So what if you wanted to wash your hands but felt that water alone wasn’t enough? That’s where “soapwort” came in!

I didn't think I would have anything #New for today's #BlueskyArtShow but then I went outside this morning and saw the first blossom of the soapwort plant (saponaria).

I do believe I see some phlox sprouts, or soapwort? 🌱

Bit far out for the soapwort, but pretty sure there was phlox here last year.

Guess we'll see. 🤭🌸

ID'd as soapwort, thank you everyone! Also it just became USEFUL although not a Nutrient Dense Superfood.
While I'm posting a bunch today, does anyone recognize this aggressively spreading ground cover, because @tkingfisher.com doesn't know what it is

So much I love here (busy nuns! soapwort marginalia! medieval people kept clean!), but the plant was called "saponaria" not "saponifera".
Soapwort was used for washing, but real soap was made in many medieval homes, and imported in large quantities and many varieties.

My swifts are shouty, my swallows are scolding an unseen hawk and there’s a hummingbird hawkmoth in my soapwort.

It’s good to be home, after a very full-on weekend.
