Set just after WWII. A Dutch woman with two brothers. She lives in the family home after the mother dies, carefully looking after everything. When one of her brother's girlfriends is foisted upon her for a few weeks, her perfectly safe life gets turned upside down

Apart from wing The Pulitzer I have no idea, western novels had been around for decades before this but were mostly ‘pulp’ fiction.
This is almost Dickensian in its scope and many layered narratives. #devonbookhour

Hi all at #devonbookhour I have been reading Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, which is my book group's pick for this month. A visceral rollercoaster ride of a novel featuring a rather unreliable narrator who is an American tradwife social media influencer. Plenty to discuss at the next meet up!

Yes, with about fifty pages to go, I have enjoyed it. Miller's descriptions of the cold, a coming snow storm, ice on the inside of windows, frozen rivers, the bleak winter sky. It's set in the liminal time between two eras - postwar austerity and the soon to emerge swinging sixties. #devonbookhour

Evening everyone - I'm close to finishing The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller. It portrays a great sense of place - Somerset in the bad winter of 1962/63. #devonbookhour

I haven't read many novels from the 1890s, apart from Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. #devonbookhour Read plenty from the 1990s - my standouts are Birdsong, The English Patient, Capt Corelli's Mandolin, The Shipping News and Chocolat.

What has taken the place of reading? Screen based games?
March 16, 2026 at 8:28 PM
#devonbookhour possibly at times , but the harsh reality of rural poverty is very well detailed e.g in Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
