While it sounds like a combination of the words man and hole, the word manhole actually roots back to the early drainage systems in the Indus Valley Civilization. A criminal from the city Mohenjo-daro traveled to the town of Dholavira and hid inside their sewers.

An Ancient City That Thrived With Almost No Water: Dholavira

When he was eventually caught, his hiding spot became a useful access point into the sewer. Word of this traveled back to Mohenjo-daro, allowing them to improve their own sewers. The invention was named in honor of the two cities, Mohenjo-Dholavira, over time warping into the simpler word, manhole.
