#Direct2D
I'm shaking in terror at the sheer hatred and danger manifested in *checks notes* a direct2d compatibility shim.

if the paint.net guy wanted to reimplement the direct2D API developed by a whole team of programmers at microsoft with their nearly unlimited budget into a completely different software environment, which essentially entails writing the entire API from the ground up, why didnt he simply Hire A Dev?

Direct2D GUI rendering broke in SynthV 2... amazing program *slow claps*

THEY FIXED THE DIRECT2D BUG YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

He used ai to port a windows graphics api so pdn in wine on Linux renders with usable performance. Most artists aren't using Linux, wine, pdn in wine on Linux, let alone know what a gpu api is, so they shouldn't even care. How many understand this page? Of course he wasn't expecting pushback.

If you're gonna use AI to reimplement Direct2D why not just use it to help you rewrite the Direct2D stuff in OpenGL entirely? Is there a reason you Need to be using D2D other then tech debt?

It's not "AI features."

Claude wrote a replacement Direct2D layer on top of Direct3D 11 so that it's now (kinda) possible to (kinda) run it on WINE/Linux. That's all. Direct2D handles drawing lines, shapes, text, UI stuff, it's analogous to Skia.

(I say "last 12 years" because PDN 4.0 shipped in 2014 and was the first version that used Direct2D, which is specifically what this new alpha build is addressing)

i don't give a fuck paint.net used claude to reverse engineer Direct2D to get it working on linux literally nobody wants to touch Direct2D throughout Wine's 33 year development history

Direct2D is a non-trivial API, mostly because of its effects system and built-in effects library. It can't just be trivially hacked up with a Skia translation layer or something.

no I think they mean that Direct2D is art
September 1, 2026 at 4:34 PM
Get someone else to do it ... with what money? And what time? Competent software engineers don't work for free, they're really expensive and they have to pay rent and buy food too.

And this isn't the app ported to Linux. It's Direct2D rewritten so PDN doesn't need WINE's incomplete+broken Direct2D.

Respectfully, have you considered talking with people experimenting with Windows API reimplementatations before rushing a quarter-baked solution that you yourself just said was "buggy and slow"? I would love to see a DXVK for Direct2D but this isn't it
September 1, 2026 at 8:11 PM
alright yeah choosing to build the whole app around direct2d of all things does justify wine support being its own project.
still a weird choice to make though, pdn is literally the only modern program i can think of that actually uses direct2d lmao

🐭hot tip! claude can bridge the gap between Direct2D support and working in linux under WINE, but it can't rebuild all the bridges that are being burned from this dev's quite negative attitude (I didn't get pictures of his other replies but he was being quite rude to everyone)
September 2, 2026 at 5:13 PM
It's not a "Linux port," it's a rewrite of Direct2D so it doesn't use the WINE version of Direct2D (which doesn't work).
September 2, 2026 at 12:22 AM
🐭he coulda went and seen about improving WINE's Direct2D support and been hailed as a hero who made something that benefits everyone but instead he went and had claude rewrite paint dot net in a way that only benefits him, and then became a big jerk about it. hobbyless behavior

Someone finally wrote the paper I've been waiting for a literal decade: μSkia, a formal semantics for 2D drawing so you can prove optimizations correct like "blending with alpha=1 is associative so rearrange the folds as you wish"

Holy crap this is so hype arxiv.org/abs/2603.23696
Semantics for 2D Rasterization
Rasterization is the process of determining the color of every pixel drawn by an application. Powerful rasterization libraries like Skia, CoreGraphics, and Direct2D put exceptional effort into drawing...

creator of pdn posted about using claude code to reverse direct2d to make pdn runnable on linux (which wouldn't be rly tenable to do without ai unless you have a spare $1M/year) and like hundreds of people on bsky went into his comments and quotes to be mad at him and call him names
September 2, 2026 at 10:12 AM
And it's hard to add any clarification about what this Direct2D thing is, the crowd just wants to scream and scream and scream.
September 1, 2026 at 10:39 PM
The also shitty part is that it almost certainly stole a bunch from a WINE/Proton fork that DOES implement parts of Direct2D for a game.

Lies about WINE not caring about Direct2D and its effect system but it's been over a year of there being an implementation of exactly those effects in D2D.
September 1, 2026 at 7:49 PM
Someone told me yesterday that making direct2d work on WINE is "cheaping out" instead of making a fully native port 😭
September 2, 2026 at 6:37 PM
tbf the issue was caused more by WINE's lack of support for Direct2D which the program heavily relied on, apart from that it wasn't really Rick's fault that it didn't work
September 7, 2026 at 1:37 AM
ah yes. wine's direct2d impl is incomplete so i will use claude code to write a whole new implementation and do nothing to actually fix the root problem. i am not a quack engineer
