"They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past."

I'd add that there's a lot of people who you can't reach, who aren't persuadable, but even if it's not possible to change who they vote for, it's possible to demoralize and disconcert them and make them feel like chumps for voting for Trump and that's valuable even if they still vote bad.

@sanders.senate.gov: 'What @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social has done is have these viewing parties, and the plan was to have one outside of MSG. And it was canceled because of Trump. And it caused a lot of disconcert in NY. So I think with luck Trump will not be at the next game and the Knicks will win.'

"They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.”
I wrote this about the media's first big test of Trump 2.0, and how poorly it scored. On the tedious, vital work of seeing what's in front of our faces for the next four years.

Week one in Trumpland: The first step is seeing what’s in front of our faces
We should resist the voices attempting to tell us it’s all fine

Set phasers to 'stun'.

And fazers to 'disconcert'.

So what happens when they delight in bad faith since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert etc etc
The dead-enders of liberal rectitude politics will say Newsom's antics serve no purpose. They're wrong.

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know their remarks are frivolous, and open to challenge. They delight in acting in bad faith since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.” -Jean-Paul Sarte

If you have friends or relatives who are unpersuadably MAGA, a good thing to tell them is that "what you've been hearing" is that Vance and Peter Thiel are running things behind the scenes because Trump's brain is so cooked. Won't change any votes but will disconcert and demoralize and thats rad too

In other news, on the way home last night in Bergen this cat was *staring* at me, intently. It was huge too. Norse gods taking feline form to disconcert the locals is clearly a thing.

I've NEVER cut off my nose to spite my face. I did once remove an ear to disconcert my leg

Conservatives use NPR to demoralize, disconcert and confuse liberals rather than try to directly persuade them to vote for Trump, which is pretty much the same strategy I'd do with a conservative-audience outlet if i controlled it.

Or if you happen to work in an office that has a Hannah and a Michael, this could be a great way to really disconcert one or both of them…
Any Hannahs out there marrying a Michael?! I’m looking to find this a new home!
