You know what? I, an American liberal, strongly approve of the social-democratic welfare state and I don’t care who knows it! Heck, we should have more of it!

I can’t believe we’re still talking about that singer today, the one I hadn’t thought about in a decade and who wasn’t good back then.

He’s about to learn what the fun new bag is for, and he’s not gonna like it. Off to the vet! (Just routine Cat Maintenance, don’t worry. But he doesn’t know that!)

Everybody knows that it is very exciting when a box arrives, and it is fun to investigate. What everyone does NOT know is that the box contains a brand-new carrier for GOING TO THE VET. Diabolical!

The fact that all of the most passionate and least informed people on this site have strong opinions on Democratic Congressional leadership is such a perfect distillation of Bluesky's essence.

yeah so we need to talk about how "screentime is bad for kids" is not really true, but "short form video on algorithm-based platforms is bad for everyone" IS true
incredibly concerning that not one but TWO close friends, both progressive-lib-left, whom I've known for 15+ years both independently and separately said they believe Israel was behind 9/11 in the last two days

the information space out there is BAD, folks. get your friends off tiktok.

young people romanticize the 90’s because the aesthetics are neat and they like the jeans or whatever

but I think it’s hard to convey to someone who wasn’t there

the world was so SMALL. it was claustrophobic compared to what we have now. in every dimension, from cooking to media to communication

Happy 9/9 to all who celebrate. (And as always, RIP Mark Sandman, who tragically didn't make it to 9/9/99.)

liberal democracy is not a luxury. liberal democracy is the magic beast that ran the table on fascism and communism and totalitarianism. we did not do this by giving up on liberal democracy and embracing evil. we did this by sticking to our most dear principles.

we actually have to destroy the alt-health industry in its entirety, much like we also need to destroy car dealerships
I guess it’s important to communicate that MAHA is fundamentally an movement by individuals to capture health care dollars by lying to people about having products and services that work
When my wife’s Meta algorithms sniffed out that she’s pregnant a bunch of medical crankery started aggressively filing into her Facebook and Instagram feeds. “MAHA moms” happen because there is a lot of money being spent strategically preying on women going through a stressful experience.

Yeah like I have ZERO insider knowledge, of economics or of tech stuff. But I know if Robert Reich says something in 2026 it can be assumed to be bullshit.
You guys have been saying this since the Biden administration. Astra is AGI. The buildout is justified. The AI labs are going to be very rich. China will keep pushing open source. A billion people are using AI! NVIDIA is going to make a mint!
The AI bubble is about to burst. Brace yourself.

Oh definitely. This is about the healthcare system, but it’s true of “liberal politics” as well, and so much else besides.
This pernicious tendency to validate extreme and harmful rejection of institutions because of relatively mundane complaints about the institution really frustrates me. It's like sympathizing with a hijacker because the flight attendant was rude.

I feel like a lot of the thinking re: MAHA ignores that it's mostly an offshoot of the crunchy-fash online media pipeline of the late 2010s that also heavily drove QAnon and (I'd argue) is very analogous to what drove Mumsnet's dominance in the UK.

You guys I have never played actual competitive football and I really wouldn't want my kids to play it if I had them. It's well worth talking about the dangers and moral compromises associated with the cultural dominance of the game.

That said, we gotta keep it FAR away from electoral politics.
