#DisenfranchisedGrief
Another disenfranchised grief:

Watching at a distance while places you know go up in flames.

This week is UK National #GriefAwareness Week. Did you know that involuntary #childlessness can include a devastating, alienating, misunderstood and unsupported experience of #DisenfranchisedGrief? It's not widely understood, even by therapists. Listen/read my @yorkuniversity.bsky.social lecture.
My lecture 'The Disenfranchised Grief of Involuntary Childlessness: a living loss society dismisses' for @GriefYork now has transcript available, if you prefer to read it. Watch/read https://youtu.be/y15Z8NE6lo8 #Grief #DisenfranchisedGrief #LivingLoss #NonDeathGrief #Childless #Doka

Grief, I’ve learned, doesn’t only belong to death. It belongs to transformation too. The involuntary kind, the kind that remakes you without your permission. #disenfranchisedgrief #chronicillness

Not all grief gets a card, flowers, or a funeral. Disenfranchised grief happens when society doesn't recognize or validate your loss, leaving you to mourn in silence. Your pain is real, even when the world doesn't name it. 🧵 1/3

Not all grief gets flowers and a eulogy. Some grief is silent, unacknowledged, unseen. And it still breaks your heart. #DisenfranchisedGrief #grief

Smacked upside the head today by posts about research that might have helped my clients. I appreciate that medicine continues to learn and grow, but how must it feel to those left behind when a new treatment could have saved their person?

Every August 12th at 7:30pm I say four sentences for my ex-husband. 7:30 is the minute we married. He doesn’t know. Eight years now. It didn’t change how I feel about him — it changed that the date stopped ambushing me. #disenfranchisedgrief is real; #forgiveness is maintenance. Which date is yours?

"'I never thought I would have a voice.' Now she has a PhD and a monthly in-person gathering changing lives in Byron Bay - we loved talked to Naomi, and making sense of childlessness.

As my bio mentions, I was a caseworker for people with AIDS in NYC in the late '80's/early '90's. This, just published on Feed the Holy, describes my relationship with one of my clients, with whom I got "too" close (that happened a lot then).

Estrangement does not end the grief — it complicates it in ways #DisenfranchisedGrief frameworks rarely reach. What a #DeathDoula holds for the estranged mourner, and why permission to mourn is not something another person can grant.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to grieve. If it mattered to you, it’s worth mourning. And if you’re still hurting—it means you loved deeply. #Chapter6 #DisenfranchisedGrief
