We'll also be covering their extensive long term attacks on both DivestOS and GrapheneOS. DivestOS was a project providing harm reduction for end-of-life devices which unlike /e/OS was being honest with users and helping them. The attacks from /e/OS on DivestOS were a major factor in it ending.

Gaël Duval, /e/OS, Murena and the surrounding communities heavily targeted DivestOS in the same way. Their attacks on DivestOS including harassment played a major role in the project being discontinued. Now that DivestOS is gone they're increasingly focused on targeting GrapheneOS across platforms.

He started doing this unprovoked because other people, not us, were criticizing them and bringing up GrapheneOS. It mostly wasn't even GrapheneOS users. /e/OS got into a conflict with DivestOS as an example and DivestOS faced attacks due to it which definitely contributed to it ending.

We're responding to them trying to mislead people about GrapheneOS, including by spreading fabricated stories about our community and team. They clearly want to direct more raids and harassment towards us. Unfortunately for them, it won't go the way their attacks on DivestOS did.

Prior to their focus on attacking GrapheneOS, /e/OS focused on attacking DivestOS. The dishonest attacks and harassment directed towards DivestOS made it a complete hell for the developers. It heavily contributed to DivestOS being discontinued. This is how many companies in this space operate.

DivestOS inherited a lot of security and stability regressions from LineageOS. It also meant they ended up with a lot of questionable features they didn't really want. They ported over a small subset of GrapheneOS privacy and security features. A newer project could port current GrapheneOS instead.

We aren't aware of another smartphone OS making the kinds of fundamental privacy and security improvements that are being done in GrapheneOS.
DivestOS did the best they could at porting a small subset of this to older devices. If others want to do it, they should avoid basing it on LineageOS.

DivestOS didn't have that option initially and was stuck on the path they chose since many of the devices they supported needed it. It didn't end up going past Android 13 or supporting more recent devices. A project extending the life of devices recently reaching end-of-life can just rely on Treble.

CalyxOS, /e/ and iodéOS are marketed as if they're in the same space as GrapheneOS but they're not. You're far better off simply using LineageOS. It's far more trustworthy and doesn't lag as far behind on updates. DivestOS tried to provide a less bad option for end-of-life devices but is dead.

If people want good privacy and security, they need a device where that's possible to achieve. DivestOS existed to reduce the insecurity of older devices. They hadn't yet ported to Android 14 or later due to the huge workload in dealing with so many problems with LineageOS and end-of-life devices.

Unplugged in also infringing on the open source licensing multiple projects including DivestOS where they ripped off their AV from without attribution. They even still use DivestOS servers without permission. SkewedZeppelin is lead developer of DivestOS (URLs are in alt text):

It's standard operating procedure for companies in this space. They completely lack any substance for their projects but have managed to grift millions of EUR in funding from the EU government. They want the gravy train to continue. They previously waged a war against DivestOS until it died.

That's an anti-privacy feature and the way it's implemented adds new VPN leak issues. The feature comes from LineageOS and was in DivestOS due to being based on it but DivestOS recommended against using it due to the leaks. Reusing the same VPN route for multiple devices isn't good for privacy.
