Part of why I write the Draconim series is to remind youth they do have power to create change. That message isn’t always welcome in Alberta—but today’s student walkout against UCP attacks on education shows it’s true. Young dragons are rising.

Feeding the Fires, book 2 in my Draconim series, came out last year. I didn’t expect wildfires would soon sweep across Canada—but here we are. Fire is natural, but we’re making it worse. We react now because we must. But real change means acting on the causes, not just the crisis.
This is a fire danger map of Canada dated May 29, 2025, published by Natural Resources Canada. The map uses a color-coded system to show fire risk levels across the country: blue for low risk, green for moderate, yellow for high, red for very high, and bright red for extreme risk. Gray areas indicate no data available. The map reveals significant regional variations in fire danger. Western Canada, particularly Alberta and parts of British Columbia and Saskatchewan, shows extensive areas of very high to extreme fire danger (red zones). Central provinces including Manitoba and Ontario display a mix of high (yellow) and very high (red) risk areas. The northern territories show predominantly low to moderate risk (blue and green), while the Maritime provinces in the east show varied conditions ranging from low to high risk. Areas of particular concern include large swaths of the Prairie provinces and parts of the boreal forest region where extreme fire danger conditions are present.
