Dragonsong/Dragonsinger and Dragondrums hold up; they're also YA and (aside from a fade to black in Dragondrums) are about as asexual as yeast.

The books written after the mid '80s have less sex, and less rape in them, and when Todd took over the franchise, there was actual meet-cute romance!

The Dragonriders of Pern books. Specifically the Harper Hall trilogy. Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums. It stars a teenage woman named Mellony who discovers small dragons and learns to communicate with them while learning how to grow up in her society.

Dragondrums was the one that made me think, "What the fuck?" And then after The White Dragon I couldn't read any more.

Would have paid good money to not have Dragondrums in the boxed set for kids. Ew.

SIXTEEN - The earliest books I remember my mom reading to me are the 3 books in the Pern series meant for younger readers: Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums.

Yes, I remember something about that. Also, the description of how Piemur rides a runner beast in [Dragondrums?] suggests that they have completely different saddles (and presumably spines)

I am not a rider, but I'm unaware of a riding style that involves switching from side to side as described

Oops, I read Dragonflight-through-Dragondrums INCESSANTLY from the ages of 10-13, that was probably not great! 😅 (Also read an astonishing number of Conan, Edgar Rice Burroughs & Xanth novels during that same time period....) The V.C. Andrews novels seemed way worse though!

Pretty sure this was the first Michael Whelan-covered book I read. And the second Pern book; I'd read Dragondrums first. I could not tell you why, so many years later, I read the last book in each of the first two trilogies first, other than it was unintentional.
THE WHITE DRAGON (1978)
Acrylic on Masonite - 20" X 30"

Although this is the third book in the series, it was my first Pern cover and I was determined to create the dragons as faithfully to Anne McCaffrey's description as possible. 1/5

McCaffrey’s Harper Hall trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, & Dragondrums) is often marketed as kids books, but the third book does have a fade-to-black sex scene.

I've only read three Anne McCaffrey books, the Harper Hall series (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums) and I loved them

I had no idea about the dolphins one, it looks hilarious

Ok confirmed, DragonDrums is the last one I read.

Same. A friend’s mom found out I liked SF/F when I was around 8 and lent me the books. She thought I’d like Dragondrums the best, but I remember being disappointed because the annoying boy was the protagonist.

I read the first 3 like mad starting at age 10, then got Dragonsong, Dragonsinger & Dragondrums I believe as they came out. But that whole weird trope & the "of course, the dragonriders are gay during dragon flights" did not register til later! I think Dolpins & Masterharper of Pern are when I quit.

Harper Hall - Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums - might be in the young adults.

Followed up with the other two in the trilogy, relatively short, easy listens while I was in the hospital & recovering.

The description of riding them is quite different from that of riding a horse (something about a toe loop and switching sides). So I assumed gene tweaked something not quite a horse

It's covered in Dragondrums, when Piemur has to ride somewhere
