I made a little ceramic drepanosaur! His name is Gigan, and I love how he came out

To brighten up a wet and rainy #FossilFriday, here's my take on the recently described drepanosaur Mirasaura grauvogeli. It's shown among the conifer Voltzia, a plant found in abundance in the same beds as Mirasaura. The pointed sail shape is based on fossil data...

Its finally out! Please Welcome Mirasaura! A new drepanosaur from the Middle Triassic of France.
@serpenillus.bsky.social made the press artwork but I couldn't hold back and had to do my own interpretation during break time... =)

Today is a very good day for long-standing enigmatic weirdos being pretty conclusively figured out. Longisquama is a drepanosaur, Nectocaris is a chaetognath, and Palaeocampa anthrax (metal name) is an aysheaiid (!!!)

I made a weird little dude today! This is Gigan the Drepanosaurus, a Triassic species that is very tricky to model out of ceramic clay. He’s got his big digging claws up in a defensive posture and speculative, Mirasaura-like pseudo-feathers.

Can’t wait to see how he looks painted!

Here it is! Please welcome the AMAZING Mirasaura grauvogeli, a NEW MARVELOUS Drepanosaur published in NATURE today!
This astonishing reptile lived during the Middle Triassic in Europe and it possessed an amazing crest made of plume-like structures!

I was commissioned to bring it to life

This tiny guy not only shows strucutres that are basically the same as in Longisquama, it shows that Longissquama was likewise a drepanosaur and that reptiles experimented with beta keratin structures way earlier than we thought so far.

Now here's Mirasaura, or "miracle lizard." It's a drepanosaur with pseudofeathers, like the mysterious Longisquama! That suggests that a.) the latter's been a drepanosaur all along (!?) b.) complex, feather-like structures evolved independently *at least twice* in reptiles!

Hypuronector a drepanosaur, its a small arboreal animal from
New Jersey and can be described as a chameleon and a leaf crossed together.

We scanned the tiny Mirasaura skull (compressed to be <1 mm(!!) thin) using @esrf.fr synchrotron radiation. It reveals the most bird-like drepanosaur skull to date, with a mostly toothless snout, large forward-facing orbits, and a wide, dome-like skull roof for a sizeable brain

I'm hoping for a drepanosaur

Working on #paleoart of the fantastic new drepanosaur Mirasaura today. I don't think it's mentioned in the paper, but there's a significant size range in the skin appendages: here's the biggest isolated example vs. the (juvenile) holotype. Neat. #fossil #paleontology

It is finally out! Welcome the new Triassic weirdo, the drepanosaur Mirasaura! Hunge congrats to all my colleagues here at the SMNS and beyond! 🤩
I am proud and grateful to present a dream project today in @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/s41...

All of these animals are only known from the claws, but drepanosaur claws are surprisingly diagnostic - you can tell which species of drepanosaur you have from just the claw! This suggests that claws in different drepanosaurs may have been adapted for different functions, like digging or climbing

Drepanosaur hand claws often make me hungry for charro beans. 🧪 Some Triassic drepanosaur species had a single large claw on each hand as well as a modified vertebral ‘claw’ on the end of their tails.

Look at this perfect Triassic friend. Mirasaura was a "monkey lizard" with a prominent sail on its back that wasn't really like scales or feathers. Studying these fossils also revealed that the enigma Longisquama is a drepanosaur with a fan, too. I'll tell you more at @smithsonianmag.bsky.social

From Middle Triassic France, "wonderful lizard" is a newly described drepanosaur sporting a crest of feather-like appendages that preserve melanin similar to those found in feathers, thus pushing the origin of such integuiment further back

Oh, but this wasn't enough.

A new paper by Spiekman et al. now propose Longisquama is a drepanosauromorph --or simiosaur, whatever -- and this comes it more peculiarites. It makes other things MAKE SENSE, too. Those RIBS.

What has a bird-like skull, a lizard-like body and a clawed tail?

It's a drepanosaur! New research has revealed another odd thing about these bizarre Triassic reptiles: a feather-like structure that's nothing to do with birds!
