I yell a lot about how outlets should use "driver," not "van (or car)," so it's always extra frustrating when I see a cycling website do it.
I do think they used it because that's how Kell O'Brien described it, which shows the pervasiveness of this language.

Even when analysing road traffic deaths after the fact the BBC uses language that dehumanises the driver of the SUV. The correct wording should be, "Then a 52 year old man crushed him with an SUV"

Amazing how the media removes the PERSON WHO DID THE HITTING from the sentence. The vehicle managed to kill a pedestrian and drive away all by itself. So sad for this family. #VisionZero #philly #traffic deaths

The Media is always quick to blame the “cyclist” for riding on a side walk, not coming to a complete stop at stop sign, but a driver injuring or killing vulnerable road users, the “car/truck/SUV” did it.
We must protect the driver at all costs!

The @nytimes.com is whitewashing mass murder again. "An SUV drove into the crowd." No, the SUV didn't drive. Someone drove it.
