A common drone fly on daisy fleabane. The background is long green leaves and sticks. The two visible flowers have about two dozen long white petals surrounding a yellow center. The fly is facing left on the left of two flowers. It mimics the appearance of a bee. The large eyes and thorax are black. The abdomen is orange with black or dark brown markings in the middle. The tail end is black.

This patrolling male dronefly (Eristalis tenax) was very interested in the male Buff-tailed Bumblebee scent-marking a bracken frond on its own mate-searching patrol route. It must have been detecting the bee pheromone.

🎨 Furry Dronefly – my artwork 🖍️

This is a sexually dimorphic bumblebee mimic.
This male below is smaller than the female.
The female looks like a white-tailed bumblebee.

My research told me this is a drone fly.

Love that yellow. 💛

So these are Common Dronefly (Eristalis tenax) and Furry Pond fly (Sericoymia superbiens) - so hopefully all those IDs have helped. Are you interested in hoverflies? Or are you identifying whats in you vicinity?

Last Day to buy seeds for pretty, drought-resistant, Achillea at half-price 😊
Here's one of ours feeding a Hoverfly and a bug earlier this week 🐝

A large Hoverfly, (probably a Dronefly) and a small unidentified bug, feeding from the pink flat-topped flower-head of an Achillea plant. The background is green and comprises the leaves and stems of other plants. It's still green because we are in Scotland and have luckily had lots of rain over the last week. Seeds available from www.jemimasgarden.co.uk

oh - you had not tagged me so never got them? The 1st one is a nomad bee not a hoverfly - Gooden’s nomada, then an Eristalis prob Arbustorum but check the face to see if dusted & finally Furry Dronefly (Eristalis intracaria) which i noted here a day or two ago. Last one you ID yourself correctly.

Een blinde bij op de zomeraster, op het balkon, in de zon.

(A drone fly on the summer aster, on the balcony, in the sun.)

Een blinde bij (zweefvlieg die doet alsof hij een bij is) op de witte asterbloem. De vlieg van opzij gezien, eet nectar, of stuifmeel, de zon doet zijn vleugels glanzen. (A drone fly (hoverfly that pretends to be a bee) on the white aster flower. The fly seen from the side, eats nectar, or pollen, the sun makes its wings shine.) De blinde bij op een andere, nog grotendeels gesloten, aster. De vlieg nu van voren gezien, met groene bladeren op de achtergrond. (The drone flyon another, still largely closed, aster. The fly now seen from the front, with green leaves in the background.) De blinde bij op weer een andere asterbloem, op de rug gezien. (The drone fly on yet another aster flower, seen from above.) De blinde bij vliegt weg. Daardoor een beetje onscherp. (The blind bee flies away. As a result, a bit out of focus.)
