Also worth noting that when diegetic writing appears, it has a full page background texture, a distressed font, and other text decoration such as dropcaps. I would still say this is a fairly subtle treatment, but it’s a good visual cue used to differentiate diegetic from non-diegetic text.

Just found a large book of St Augustine's works from 1489, with hand-painted blue & red dropcaps throughout. And annotations including this amazing manicule. And I absolutely cannot afford it but also can I?

This also shows off the early printing technique of putting a tiny letter in the dropcap space, with the expectation that a later artist would go through the book to add fancy dropcaps. Which is exactly what happened in this book.

Here's a 14th C manuscript that was going to have really ornate initial dropcaps but was never finished. It's just so cool to have a book that is so old it retains an echo of this!

BTW, did the dropcaps/alphabet for Albyon’s Almanac originate from old illustrated manuscripts? Or were they the natural choice once “old world almanac” was decided?

Okay, dropcaps are dangerous and hilarious if you're not paying attention while typesetting. Just turned "a land" into "bland" because auto widow-and-orphan control sucks, and the B was right there.

At least that's for doing it manually. If your OTF or TTF fonts are installed system-wide you can just
\setsansfont{Helvetica}
(And also define whole new "font families" (which I use with a lovely Fraktur font to do some delightful dropcaps).)

It's not always an issue in practice -- D2D doesn't like dropcaps either and they're usually just fine -- but it can be scary if you're not used to dealing with HTML and the validator D2D uses just spits out seeming gibberish.

I liked the movie as a kid, but it doesn’t hold up. The book, though, I read as a teenager, the really nice version with the multicolored text and full-page dropcaps, and it was so pretty and trippy and amazing it blew my mind. But hey I’m not alone on the Care Bears! And ofc it’s you ❤️
