I wouldn't ever describe Gemmel as a 'good' writer. He's very much closer to Howard (Conan) than Tolkien. The limitations are quite clear if you ever read one of his novels. Legend is fun & Druss is a great character in it but everything else is paper thin.

Adobe's Jason Druss takes us through everything new in Premiere Beta from IBC2026, from three fresh Color Mode style modules to one-click Auto Color and HSL masking. It's a long watch, but a good one. buff.ly/JZiSA4G #AdobePremiere #IBC2026

Found this old copy of David Gemmell’s Legend. I read the Druss books as a teenager, and Gemmell was a huge part of what got me into reading.

This 1988 US reprint reverted to the original working title: Against the Horde.

Drew McIntyre should play Druss the Legend if they ever do a Drenai series on film.

Hell, Russell Crowe could play old Druss.

Here at Curious King we were incredibly honoured to work on creating a beautiful edition of his novel and show off Druss “The Legend” Deathwalker in all his glory, as you can see here with our Deluxe Edition.

Have you read Legend? Do you own one of our editions? Let us know in the comments.

His literary career took off with the publication of his first novel, Legend” in 1984. This book introduced readers to the world of Drenai and its iconic hero, Druss, setting the stage for a prolific writing career.

Folks like Druss the Legend (although I’d argue every character in that novel was like that) and Darrow in the first half of the series. by Zeigis

Read Legend
Unc still got it
Gets better as it goes - I really didn't like the first 50 or so pages before Druss shows up, but the stuff with Rek does pay off even if I think the romance is painfully thin
Really liked this in the end had some great moments
Ending is schmaltzy tho
