It kind of feels like all of a sudden when WE need emotional labor and support it's like, we have to go out of our way to make it extremely clear what support we need (even if by nature it's hard to tell sometimes), or else we are just shitty drybegging manipulators who need a callout post

He doesn't bring up how his birthday is coming up, creating a vacuum in the situation that I'm expected to fill. That's called drybegging.
I don't acknowledge it & a plan gets agreed on to talk more later, which he proceeds to obstruct. This is punitive devaluation but also a hunger games test.

We occasionally still talk today, though he is always up to some new tricks. He doesn't know I spent years & years learning about anti-social personalities while processing trauma with therapists.
His new thing over the last few years is contacting me before his birthday.

I've been close to textbook narcissists for the majority of my life by no choice of my own. Among several, one was someone I considered a friend for many years, whose acqaintance I made all the way back in kindergarden. We truly grew up side by side & it gave me insight into how narcissists think.
