Turns out using a bootable USB is not the same as dual booting.
Will try actual dualbooting tomorrow after trying what a few people have helpfully suggested.

Did you know: Fedora workstation KDE edition is a free download you can just put it on a USB and start dualbooting that thing.

the only possible conclusion for why i had such a good time dualbooting while others dont is that it's not windows, it's uefi implementations being bad

if i have to dualboot and run lightroom i will be unhappy. Dualbooting WindowsXP to play Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge (RIP Westwood Studios) before good win7 fixes existed was totally worth doing, but not for Lightroom >_>...

If you got a spare SSD install Linux there with its own bootloader, so it doesn't interefere with Windows, and try dualbooting it. Remember to set first in the boot order the Linux bootloader in your BIOS first, so that handles both Windows and Linux.

Jailbroken chromebook proot who's a straight A student after she started dualbooting into a new arch installation accidentally booting into chromeos and then getting her boot order rearranged so she's stuck with the special ed kids until the school nurse can change her bios settings,,,,,
