"homespun proto plex" sounds fancier than the reality of making my desktop also be a NAS with dyndns, that i could then ftp into from anywhere to download standard definition xvid encodes compressed way down such to fit 120+ minutes of video onto a 650mb CD-R
i have been mostly using plex and before that a kind of homespun proto-plex since 2003, tho i had some streaming services back when they were still pretty cheap and trying to onboard people

dyndns?

i’ve already got a subdomain cname’d to a dyndns record that my router is updating daily. just need to shunt inbound traffic to my pc and figure out caddyfile and then i’m all set to CONNECTIVITY ERROR

catch it at my fancy new dyndns address! unless mom needs to make a phone call and kicks my modem off the net

bluesky I see what you did with the diaper fetish people but can we start flagging the LLM engagement spam accounts that all have dyndns domains and getting rid of them

Jellyfin would require them to set up a reverse proxy and dyndns if they want to access it remotely
October 8, 2025 at 9:03 PM
Sure. Basic Linux distro. Add nginx. Hack around etc/nginx and the docs. Probably your best way to do it. Do you need it externally accessible? If so you're looking at dyndns probably unless you have a static ip
August 21, 2025 at 11:36 AM
also if you're wondering: no i don't have dynamic DNS. i just rawdog it whenever my home IP changes (not often). i probably have at least 50 DNS records so of course this sucks a lot but last i checked the CF-recced dynDNS solution is a fucking perl script and i'm too lazy to set that up
accidentally made my uptime status page VPS inaccessible bc i updated all my DNS records by hand when my home IP changed and i guess i accidentally changed the uptime record in the process

i did not notice for at least a week

one of those dyndns clones perhaps? that’s what i use on my router

PeopleSoft, Taleo, DynDNS, StorageTek, VirtualBox, OpenOffice, Solaris, SPARC, MySQL. They're basically the reverse Midas of the tech world. Everything they touch turns to loose tinfoil.

I still miss Sun Microsystems' purple servers.

Java. JavaBeans. ENTERPRISE JAVABEANS.

Respect to Dyn (of DynDNS fame) for not cancelling my lifetime subscription even after being acquired by Oracle, going on about 15 years or something nutty like that.

Still dynamically updating my subdomain with my cable modem IP.

getting a free DynDNS to work with the router, an "open internet" config from ISP and esp8266 behind to cooperate ...
is a way to spend a Sunday 🤓

So anyway. I figured out how to do DynDNS on Porkbun. Now my dumb domain runs things.
