#Dystopias
one of the things dystopias get wrong is that the end of the world is going to be a series of boring events making everything worse forever

They're doing all the other dystopias, why not Tank Girl?

I don’t really like “media literacy” as a concept but I do wish elite members of society stopped trying to build the dystopias they see in movies because they only paid attention to slick production choices and ignored the message that these are awful places to live.

he's not even cool. all my books and anime promised me cool looking fascist dystopias but all we get is this lame ass mf
November 3, 2026 at 8:21 PM
Why is there no fascism here? Literally creating dystopias left and right currently

Hi! I’m Jaymie (She/They), and I write about giant robots, neon dystopias, and queer lesbian werewolves (among other things!)

I’m currently working on an IP work WIP, an original novella called “Chosen” set in a not-quite-Imperial-Rome setting

Why can't we live in one of the cool cyberpunk dystopias? This one is so lame.
November 3, 2026 at 6:58 PM
I think all my novels are under 300 pages? At least the way I formatted them.
They cover a decent range of genres from romcoms to sci fi dystopias to historical romances to fantasci action.

desantis and right-wing governors like him turning states into maga dystopias are a big reason the country just torched the GOP
DeSantis: "Let's just be clear about what happened last night. This is as close to an extinction-level event for Republicans in many parts of the country probably as we have seen in the last 100 years ... if the Republican Party doesn't have Texas an anchor, we're not going to be viable nationally"

I've started writing optimistic utopian fantasy because I was really feeling the absence of stories set in places I might want to live.

And maybe because I superstitiously feel as though we wrote so many dystopias that we ended up in one.

OTD 1980: The Two Ronnies – The Worm That Turned
After so many ’70s grim dystopias, now the Ronnies react to Margaret Thatcher (but not in the way ’80s dystopias would)
Though somehow I don’t think being dominated by Diana Dors had quite the effect on boys watching that the writers intended…

House music is very much a continuation and celebration of Disco, which is both beautiful and important. But Atkins wanted to be weird. He wanted to be avant garde. He wanted to talk about Utopias and Dystopias, decline and rebirth. He wanted his music to be eclectic, futuristic.

I feel this way about manufacturing systems--why are there so many dystopias with laser guns that go pew-pew but no tractors? That's not how economies work.
November 2, 2026 at 4:27 PM
Dumb question: is there any fiction about this moment? I've been so focused on when things go wrong and dystopias... (I started reading Divergent and winced when they claimed community as their strength) Where is the hope books?

Telling that so many of the literary warnings of dystopias that were so loved and quoted by past Republicans are reviled and hidden by the Trumplicans.
October 31, 2026 at 7:04 PM
and by definition I don't just mean by those hypothetical people, I mean can we even call it a utopia if it doesn't satisfy everyone/do no harm/something? which is also why I think most dystopias aren't dystopias, because they're not the opposite of that unattainable (narratively boring) perfection
