there's this really stupid misconception about Myanmar floating around in leftie spaces where people think the resistance in the civil war is this collection of based anarchist militias when it's basically the opposite of that and most of the EAOs are functionally unrecognized states

I am extremely mad that this is like the only pdf I did not bookmark but there was a really interesting article on the EAOs in Myanmar (pre-2021 coup) who very specifically do basic state capacity stuff in the areas they control as a legitimacy building tool

I am extremely mad that this is like the only pdf I did not bookmark but there was a really interesting article on the EAOs in Myanmar (pre-2021 coup) who very specifically do basic state capacity stuff in the areas they control as a legitimacy building tool
the myanmar PDF and allied EAOs built an army from scratch in one of the poorest countries on earth while ACTIVELY BEING BOMBED by a military with decades of counterinsurgency experience!

The EAOs in Myanmar have been fighting on and off civil wars with the various governments of Myanmar since that country became independent (and even before that). They're the heavy hitters in that conflict and most of the rebels went to them for training as the conflict intensified

I can't find it anymore but there was a great journal article on how EAOs in Myanmar usually turned to building institutions and state capacity to build legitimacy with the populations they were embedded in and given that HTS has done the same, there's probably enough for a book on that phenomenon
Others are pointing to Russia/Iran being spent due to the events of the last three years but we also can't count out HTS having devoted a lot of time and effort to building civilian state capacity in the last 5 years or so

to be clear we have continued to report on that conflict and covered the EAOs and much more besides 3d printed guns. My colleague @jamesstout.bsky.social has done the bulk of this work and definitely does not characterize the conflict that way.

Like it definitely had its place for urban insurgency where that kind of arms trade was harder to access (and this is largely where you did see the FGC-9) but the EAOs have machine tools, they can make their own guns

In Myanmar, the anti-coup resistance is also a lot of what can be described as professional light infantry and that transformation happened as rapidly as it did because there EAOs in the hinterlands have been fighting on and off wars with the Burmese state since its inception

I remember being underway for a good portion of that (was a 7th Fleet guy) and just hoping my EAOS came soon enough.
