Second open access Mauna Loa paper available! Here we investigate storage depths and degassing systematics using fluid inclusions, and olivine deformation using EBSD in lavas and tephras from 7 eruptions (1852-2022). TLDR: SO2 degasses earlier than expected doi.org/10.1007/s004...

There's a lab facility I know of which bought a massive used TV - supposedly from the auction of a sports bar which closed down - to get all their electron microscopy windows onto one screen (SEM+EBSD+EDS+FIB). 96 inches I think? It "really helped with collaboration", so they said.

1/ EXTRA - from the paper accepted yesterday - we have a new blueschist locality!

This is a really cool blueschist - that deserves an EBSD study in my opinion, because it is one of the few cases you can tie structures to the blueschist facies!

Me : I just need one EBSD map and then this paper is ready to submit
My vintage thin section: I've actually had enough of being stuck to this glass for 30yrs, I'm just going to fall off here as you colloidal polish me.

An exciting new piece of work just out as a preprint - here we use 3D electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), enabled by Xe plasma focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (pFIB-SEM) to measure and understand microstructures in 3D

I woke up to a bunch of new followers, so I should share some things that we do here at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo. Here is my JGR: Solid Earth paper on porosity in lower crustal faults and ductile shear zones using microCT, EBSD, SEM-CL.

9 hours of sample prep, 8 hours of optimization, and 66 hours of data collection later, 25% of the most interesting sample I have ever worked with is mapped!

My (non-ion beam milling) mica-friendly polishing protocol is getting pretty damn dialed in too.

This was an idea I had 10 years ago, demonstrated in principle 6 years ago, and Tianbi got working on a small demo data set about 4 months ago - so we wrote it up. It's a cute image processing 'trick' that's widely used, and can be applied to #EBSD patterns to improve their quality.
