Vietnam's fishers bear the brunt of plastic pollution, but hold part of the solution
Plastic bags and bottles, aquaculture feed bags, nylon netting and ropes don’t sound like the makings of a healthy fishing haul. However, nets replete with these items are a near-daily reality for the majority of fishers interviewed by researchers during a recent study in Vietnam. Plastic waste causes small-scale fishers in Vietnam to lose an average of US$3,421 per vessel, per year, in lost fishing time, reduced catch efficiency and damaged gear, the study assessing the economic impacts of plastic debris on fishing livelihoods found. This represents a 10-25 per cent reduction in the annual income of vessel owners. Fishers interviewed for the study reported that they had significantly increased their fishing efforts in recent years in response to the combined pressures of overexploited fish stocks and plastic pollution. “Before, 6-7 hauls were enough [to turn a profit],” one interviewee told the researchers. “Now it takes 20-25 hauls.” The study also highlights how fishers could play a significant role in solutions tackling the plastic pollution crisis, including through “fishing for litter” programs that pay fishers modest financial incentives to bring back plastic bycatch for disposal and processing on land. “When you see firsthand the sheer volume of [plastic waste] in...

Catch A Wave: Ocean Power Joins The Renewable Energy Mix
Eco Wave Renewable energy, led by solar and wind combined with battery storage, along with hydro and geothermal projects, is the fastest-growing source of new electricity generation in the U.S., helping to wean the grid from greenhouse gas-spewing fossil fuels. The clean power arsenal could soon grow with another form of natural energy: ocean waves. Last week, Stockholm-based startup Eco Wave began operating the first wave-based electric power project in the U.S.

Himalayan hazards are becoming more complex, our warning systems need to catch up
After the flood, Nepal and China agreed in principle to share real-time information about floods, landslides and glacial lakes. However, despite Nepal’s foreign minister raising the issue during a visit to China in May 2026, no formal agreement has been signed. Across the Himalayas and Hindu Kush mountain ranges, rivers, weather systems and infrastructure frequently span national boundaries. Our ongoing research shows a hazard that begins in one place can have lethal consequences – and create new warning requirements – far downstream. A warming climate is increasing these risks by thinning glaciers, thawing permafrost and destabilising slopes, even if climate change isn’t the sole explanation for every disaster. Meanwhile, roads and hydropower projects are putting more people and infrastructure in threatened valleys. Cooperation has to come before the disaster Some cross-border early-warning arrangements already exist between Nepal and its neighbours, particularly for recurring floods. But sudden, cascading events such as the recent disaster pose a different challenge. A warning has value only if it travels the whole distance – from a sensor in the mountains, through scientific agencies, national and local authorities, to households in the valleys and plains below, in the minutes that matter. Community-based flood warning already works...

In the 1970's eco-alternative to a dogmatic socio-economy, reduced working hours were prescribed to prompt interests and activities for people as a counter to a 'training' system which required their qualifications to compete for jobs! It's a shame it's taken so long for the young to catch on.
