#EPROM
This hardware is tempting. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Z80; coding in assembly felt like an altered state of mind.
As if I need another project, an EPROM programmer, or an RS232-to-USB bridge.
An ESP32 is literally 1,000 times faster.
Boy, so what's it gonna be?
Cracked it open. It turns out this isn't just a terminal; it's a complete Z80 microcomputer.
The board is populated with the full Zilog ecosystem: a Z80 CPU, a PIO for parallel I/O, a DART (Dual Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) for serial communications, and a CTC for timing. RTC still keeps time

Which leads me to an #electronicsquestion

Has anyone tried to put a (windowless, one time programmable) EPROM in a place where it stays hot around the storage limit, and check if it gets significantly erased within years?

Might lead to a way to re-use them from scrap

Before turning it on, let's open it up to see if we can learn anything more. We have a 1993 copyright on the PCB, 1994 copyright on the 1.0.0 ROM. It's powered by a Motorola 68k core, and uses the same Zilog SCC serial chip for LocalTalk as the Mac did.

Does […]

My copy of Yar's Revenge was an EPROM which lived on a piece of foam that went in our Atari 2600 developer cartridge we had. It wasn't until 30 fucking years later that I learned that what we had was a buggy as hell beta version. The actual game is still annoying as hell but worked.

I bought a Power Blade 2 cart for NES there. Clerk made me buy it first before he would open the cart to check the PCB. Total fake—EPROM conversion, bodge wires, electrical tape. The poor clerk then had to fight the owner on the phone to issue me a refund and got chewed out for opening the cart. 😑

The 1702 has a great origin story: Dov Frohman invented the EPROM at Intel after studying defective chips whose floating gates trapped stray charge. He turned a failure mode into the product. And for years memory paid Intel's bills while the 8080 was the side bet. You were playing on the good stuff.

* okay, having thought about this way too much, I think it’s technically EPROM (but not EEPROM)

Sega Made a Custom Mega CD BIOS for Sonic Team’s Kazuyuki Hoshino in 1991; 35 Years Later, the Rare Boot EPROM Has Resurfaced Online https://www.notebookcheck.net/1405792.html
Sega’s custom 1991 Sonic Mega CD BIOS resurfaces online
Hidden Palace has released a rare custom Mega CD BIOS created for Sonic Team creative director Kazuyuki Hoshino in 1991, featuring a personalized Sonic boot screen and modified revision text. The dumped EPROM offers a glimpse into Sega’s early CD development culture, though how the one-off gift left the company and resurfaced decades later remains unknown.

It's quite possible I imagined the original LCD screen still worked on the Wideboy dev system. It was a while ago. I had another normal Gameboy I tested builds on with a dev cartridge (normal sized Gameboy cartridge that had an EPROM socket on board).

I'll see if I still have my working PB10 in a box somewhere. Frankly this EPROM probably isn't anything special - I think these SMC devices expect a few bits of routing data and not much more.

Thanks. There is a version that uses a more modern surface mount EPROM, but for some reason they placed it on the top of the board.

No breadboarding here: just hard-wired veroboard with no safety net! The empty sockets are for the 6502, 2732 EPROM, and the 6522 VIA. I have no idea what happened to the EPROM, but the 6502 and 6522 were reused in other projects.

- Original SNES Mask ROM: up to 4MB
- SNES Mask ROM to TSOP adapter boards: up to 4MB
- 27C801 UV EPROM: up to 1MB
- 27C160 UV EPROM: up to 2MB
- 29F160 to 27C160 UV EPROM adapter board: up to 4MB, AND makes the board OSCR-flashable
