ETH being false is arguably more of a holy-fucking-shit than quasi-RH or UGC, because we got the result we expected there. To give an idea of how big a deal this is, there were stronger versions of ETH often conjectured, including strong ETH and various quantum ETH variants.

Strictly speaking, they were both correct in that it will be extraordinarily difficult to prove ETH true.

Or maybe it will be like me and my wife, who are quite surprised that ETH is false and that AI can prove it. (I once wrote a paper with hardness result based on ETH.) Lots to learn from new techniques that AI is discovering.

OpenAI says its model refuted ETH with a subexponential 3-SAT algorithm. I computed from the paper's parameters that it is brute force up to 2^131071 variables and clauses, beyond any formula a computer can store. SAT solvers gain nothing. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Most of my theorem statements start with "assuming ETH" (or ETH for PPAD), but the results still make sense as long as the running time is much more than 2^{√n} 😅
