Just announced: Iceland has urgently moved up its referendum to join the European Union - to 29 August.

A reminder: 🇮🇸 is in many ways already a non-voting 🇪🇺 member because of the EEA. This would give them voting power to shape the laws they have to follow.

2/ Gender changes within the EU/EEA were originally set to receive automatic recognition, but this plan was dropped to prevent older trans men living in the EEA from unintentionally losing their pension rights.

Another mystery solved.

Yes, Iceland are an independent sovereign state. Who also happen to be in the Single Market, the EEA and the Schengen zone, with freedom of movement for people, goods and services. But if the UK did that I'd be screaming about Brexit betrayal and being an EU puppet.

There is currently significant respiratory virus activity in the EU/EEA, with both #influenza and #RSV epidemics ongoing.

#Vaccination campaigns against respiratory pathogens continue in many EU/EEA countries, and people who are eligible for vaccination are encouraged to get vaccinated.

In the absence of the UK being in the EU, or the EEA and the EU internal market, this is very clearly in the best interests of Gibraltar and its people.

What Farage and co think is frankly irrelevant.

Great to welcome Brigitte Haas in Brussels.

Our EU-Liechtenstein cooperation as part of the EEA is a 30-year success story.

And together, we’re tackling today's geopolitical challenges.

The EU does not preclude Canada joining the EEA, but it is not on the table either.

2) non-EU EEA states would see major disruption of a system that is designed for small, less-politicised countries, so also likely to raise problems

of course, could build a non-EEA system for UK SM participation, but that would be another level of complexity for EU

Laut der EEA sind die meisten Meere, Seen und Flüsse in der EU sauber. ~85% der getesteten Badestellen hatten 2025 eine exzellente Wasserqualität, 96% erfüllten die EU-Mindeststandards.

Yes. The EU/EEA should do so as well.

So much of the coverage around freedom of movement focuses on EU nationals coming to live in the UK.

But did you know 1.2 million Brit's live in the EU and EEA?
British citizens in the EU five years on from Brexit - UK in a changing Europe
Michaela Benson considers why it is timely to consider the longer impact of Brexit for British citizens living in the EU, EEA and EFTA member states.

"C’mon EU Vikings!

...Beyond a departing Iceland taking EFTA and the EEA agreements to under critical mass for any notion of a club of members, there are also the other aspects that could cause a domino effect upon Norway in particular."

Norway and Iceland have signed up to participate in the EU single market via the EEA, and Switzerland has also signed up to participate in many aspects of it. Redwood is either very ignorant or very dishonest (or both).
What’s extremely frustrating about this is that a version of Brexit - much more hardline than deals any of these countries have with EU - was presented to Parliament multiple times by Theresa May yet John and his fellow clowns voted against it as it wasn’t hard enough

I wonder if, in his private moments, the born-again racist Douglas Carswell now regrets leaving the EU/EEA in favour of "rediscovering our global vocation".

The old Brexiter claim that 'the EU is racist' [as immigration policy favours Europeans] must haunt some of them.

The idea that Canadians would get to go through the fast EU/EEA passport queue and Brits would not is just too funny for words

Andrew Lilico would have a conniption
Here's a non-paywalled version of the reporting on Canada becoming a possible "associate member" of the EU. It suggests Canada is willing to agree free movement of people, which (if true) would mean that the EU would be willing to agree more internal market access.

Technically the basics aren't difficult, The EEA Agreement is a precedent. But politically it may be bumpy, and it will be very important for the functioning of the SM and the coherence of the EU that the EU holds the line. Special deals for an on-again-off-again member would send the wrong signal.

Iceland is a member of the EEA, which gives it access to the EU’s single market. This means goods, services, capital, and people can move freely between Iceland and EU member states. the UK left both the EU and the EEA, whereas Iceland remains inside the EEA. UK never voted to leave the EEA

1/🧵 Yet another thread of archive finds. Here’s government advice on the Bill’s implication on the operation of EU/EEA equality laws, freedom of movement, and—surprise—the definition of “same-sex” relationships.

The Supreme Court is wrong. And we have the receipts, indeed, too many receipts.

Makes perfect sense.

The UK is not a member of the EU.

They are not a member of EFTA/EEA.

They are not even an applicant to neither the EU nor EFTA/EEA.

All the UK has with the EU is an FTA. An FTA that the UK still doesn’t honour. Not really partnership material these days.

I completely missed the interesting development in Iceland, where the new coalition government agreed to hold a referendum on resuming EU accession talks before 2027. Add to this the renewed EU debate in Norway, and it raises questions about the future of the EEA Agreement.
