Another scorpion wannabe moth. This one is substantially larger than the one I posted yesterday, and in a different family. Genus Eulithis, in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, September 30, 2025.

A v early Phoenix from last night’s trap: should peak in July

Eulithis prunata

Eulithis implies ‘good stone’ - from the sandstone colour of moths in the genus

‘prunata’ suggests feeding on Prunus, which isn’t correct as the larvae feed on Ribes.

Seems mistakes were invented long before ChatGPT

A lovely Phoenix. Who doesn't love a cuddly Pale Tussock?
I thought this pale Waved Umber was extremely smart. Some NFY still data-crunching

1/2 Took #moth trap to Scotland on holiday this past summer. Many records were NM79 hectad firsts, but that's due to under-recording. Nicest of first night were this early-for-season juniper carpet (Thera juniperata subsp scotica - maybe only second VC97 record!), elegant chevron (Eulithis testata)…

Eulithis testata (L.) Chevron, flies in early autumn, on moorland & scrubby, upland grassland. It uses willows, aspen, hazel & birches as a larval food source. But in the Hebrides, Rowan seems to be a primary food source.

Eulithis pyraliata (D & S) Barred Straw. Cleavers & other Galium species are the larval hosts. Found in hedgerows, ditches, verges, woodland rides and margins, & rough scrubby grassland. It overwinters as an egg on the food plant; larvae emerge in spring to early summer .
