The National Chargepoint Registry (NCR), which serves as the UK's open database for public electric vehicle charge point information, will be retired on 28 November 2024. As part of this transition, no new data will be accepted into the NCR after 11 November 2024. The NCR has been in place since 2011 as a source of open data on EV charge points for developers, local authorities and industry leaders. It delivers accessible information on the locations, connector types and operational hours of charge points across the UK, enabling mobility providers, app developers, and urban planners to enhance EV adoption and improve infrastructure development.

Zapmap has been awarded a £240,000 contract to build a system for aggregating #opendata from EV charge point operators in the UK www.contractsfinder.service.gov.uk/notice/07c2d...

But the aggregated data won't be served to the public; it's only for DfT and other government bodies.

The Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 mandate that EV Charge Point Operators (CPOs) must open charge point data accurately through the Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) protocol by 24th Nov 2024. We expect industry, including CPOs, eMSPs and other intermediaries, to use open data to ensure that consumers have access to accurate, timely data on public chargepoints, enabling them to find and use the most appropriate chargepoints for their needs with confidence. Given the prevalence of such providers, we do not currently see a need for DfT to build a data platform to serve aggregated open data to consumers. There is however a clear need to build a solution to enable DfT, regulators and other government departments and agencies to use open data effectively. The purpose of the procurement is to select a supplier to aggregate real-time data from public charge points in the UK, perform data quality checks, and submit this data to the Department for Transport (DfT) for regulatory and policy purposes.

UK House of Lords written question UIN HL8999, tabled on 1 July 2025 and answered on 14 July 2025: Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth Conservative, Life peer Lords To ask His Majesty's Government how, if at all, they publicise the specific location and availability of charging points for electric vehicles. Answer Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill Labour, Life peer Lords The Government is committed to making it easy for consumers to find public chargepoints. To support this, the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 came into effect in November 2023. These regulations require operators to share open data freely – including chargepoint location and availability information. This data is then made available to consumers via commercial platforms such as mapping services and roaming providers.

We plan to build a data platform, pipeline and tools to consume and use open data from public chargepoints to monitor policy outcomes, help regulate the industry and shape future policy. As part of this initiative, the EV Open Data Programme, we intend to appoint a partner who will collect open data across all public UK chargepoints in real time and provide this to the DfT. We will ingest this data on a periodic basis into the DfT data platform for processing and serving use cases to different user groups.
