Earthion is fantastic.
I enjoyed constantly switching sub-weapons to stay effective in battle and its update system. While there is a dedicated button for simultaneous main and sub-weapon fire, I preferred using my thumb to press two buttons at once.

Also Earthion exceeds the standard arcade SHMUP experience. Beyond the 8 massive stages, it includes bonus content like challenges, the original prototype, old demos and a bizarre select screen demo featuring an anime bunny girl who you must save so you can...gamble?

I’m not sure if this is common practice for other shoot 'em ups, but in Earthion, you MUST use your thumb to press two buttons simultaneously so you use your main and sub weapons!

It still sounds like it's worth a try. To be fair, Earthion is built upon decades of game development experience and is an absolute freak for the system.
I remember getting it on the Mega Drive in @basearcade.bsky.social and people who saw lost their minds. 😂

I don’t want to throw that Dungeon Automata and its team under the bus for what he’s doing, but it does mean projects he’s involved in beyond that aren’t something I’d partake in, especially games he’d co-develop.

played earthion for the first time yesterday and, maybe it's just me, but i'm finding that even on normal the game just kinda throws enemies and projectiles at you expecting you to attack accordingly and that kinda annoys me. but replayability is also important for shmups anyways so i'll push onward

Ah, dangit, I confused it entirely with Earthion - I've got them side-by-side on my wishlist.
Will have to check it out regardless. I've had a bit of a hostile relationship with metroidvanias because they started feeling samey after a while.
