Had a lot of fun teaching Andriessen's "Hadewijch" today and, with the help of an article by Rokus De Groot, folding in a huge amount of European intellectual history, from Medieval trinity symbolism to German Romanticism to Brecht to Adorno & Benjamin to the Darmstadt School to Umberto Eco!
Still thinking about _Evil Does Not Exist_ and about how yes, it's an eco-parable, but it's both mundane and grounded and unsettling and bursting with symbolism.
What _Evil Does Not Exist_ does with tone is amazing, but also mostly all in your head & the context you bring to it.
It's also brilliantly structured. Slow, seemingly mundane, but filled w/resonance that's both easy to miss & on the nose & almost overwhelming, depending on your attunement.
