The Dispatch is without paywall for a moment! Great article here: A ‘whitehall’ in Birmingham? A safari park in Edgbaston? A vision for the future of Birmingham — from 1918

William Haywood's plans for Birmingham were both bold and fantastical. But they helped shape the modern city

#OctoberWorldbuilders Cosplayers?

Any of them, some would be distinctive than others, but any would be nice. (Or fan-art, anyone? Bueller?)

But who? One of Edgbaston sisters perhaps...

They still haven't plotted the cycle lane along Priory Road and Edgbaston Road here. It's nearing 5 years old.

🏰 Heritage highlight: Perrott’s Folly, Birmingham

Built in 1758, this Grade II* listed tower later served as a weather observatory. It’s also said to have inspired one of Tolkien’s two towers in The Lord of the Rings, alongside the nearby Edgbaston Waterworks tower.

My dad was a bank manager in Birmingham. His branch's area had two distinct parts - wealthy (Edgbaston) and relatively poor (Selly Oak). He told me that most of his customers lived within their income, but the propensity to get into debt was the same, regardless of income.

England reduce Pakistan to 131/8 & are closing in on a crucial tri-series win.

But in comes ODI debutant Razaullah & we remember what he did against England in the Edgbaston Test!

Commentary coming on 5 Sports Extra & @BBCSounds.

Quiet couple of hours first thing around Edgbaston Res with @robhemming25.bsky.social. Distinct lack or storm blown seabirds or Nutcrackers but Brambling was a nice surprise, also two teal and the first Kingfisher for a while.

Australia fightback in rollercoaster start to deciding Test against South Africa
Australia fightback in rollercoaster start to deciding Test against South Africa
* Decision to bowl first looked like backfiring * But hosts all out for 329 after being 140-0 at lunch For a time, it was heading up there with the worst. David Gower at Leeds in 1989, when Australia topped 600 and declared. Nasser Hussain in Brisbane, 2002, when Australia were 364 for 2 by the end of the day. Edgbaston 2005, where England lamped 407 from 80 overs. Those were the looming comparisons for captains deciding to bowl at the toss, after Pat Cummins did the same in the third Test at Cape Town, only for South Africa’s openers to smash 140 by lunch. Yet, by day’s end, Australia had taken 10 for a further 189, Mitchell Starc destroying the tail with four wickets in six balls, all out 329 constituting a serious Australian comeback. What a rollercoaster. The Australian setup has looked frazzled this tour: confused player selections for the squad, then for the XIs, confused shot selection in the middle, players bouncing around the order with nightwatch duties and injury absences. Here they chose to leave out their best player from the second Test, Scott Boland, for Nathan Lyon, and were forced to leave out their best player of the last decade, Steve Smith, for Josh Inglis, as well as dropping Nic Maddinson and Beau Webster for Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly. The last time a touring Australian side made four non-disciplinary changes was in the West Indies in 1984. Continue reading...

Why is BT internet and digital phone so inefficient for elderly and infirm in Pavenham Drive, Edgbaston, West Midlands? It’s either slow or too easily disconnects ….. We need tgeee systems full proof as it’s the only emergency lines, ever since the copper lines got disconnected!

OTD: MIDLAND COUNTIES CUP 1881

Edgbaston Crusaders 1g 2t
Leicester 0

First round, 22 October

In the club’s second season they played their first ever competitive match. But it would take 16 seasons for the black-clad Death or Glory Boys to become Tigers and get their hands on the cup.

Edgbaston reservoir

A visit up to patch to search for Rock Pipit didn't produce the desired target.

Pair each of Wigeon & Gadwall was nice to see, though. Plus 25+Redwing & an increase in Chaffinch
