Hello, I’d like to report more fraud.

Linda McMahon is dismantling the Department of Education while spending $43K of taxpayer money on new office furniture. Nothing says government efficiency like redecorating on your way out.

The speed at which the fash Anakin discourse has moved up the fash media pipeline should probably be studied. Twitter working at peak efficiency.
Why would George Lucas do this to George Lucas?

But has efficiency and administrative efficiency gone up by a similar level? (He said, somewhat begging the question.)

"There are reasons other than efficiency."

Yup.
Altman is right that local inference is inefficient. The thing is there are reasons other than efficiency for local inference. Seeing a lot of nonsensical blabbering from both sides of the fence on this one.

Stalin nodded approvingly with the efficiency and thoroughness this was conducted

blocked for efficiency

Yes.

But in addition, the whole "maximum efficiency" thing is easy to rebuke. Is maximum efficiency really the thing you want to optimize for?

A system optimized for maximum efficiency is also a system that will completely break at the slightest problem anywhere.

Ehhhh... only under an inappropriately narrow definition of efficiency

I think we need to push back hard against the assumption that efficiency is the ultimate good

every single article about this is ragebait

he's objectively correct when it comes to pure inference efficiency! and also, inference efficiency is not a thing the world at large cares that much about!

WELL DAMN! do you like it gentle or should i go for efficiency

Efficiency' has come to mean vesting more and more power to managers, supervisors, and presumed 'efficiency experts,' so that actual producers have almost zero autonomy.

Weaker fuel-efficiency rules mean more pollution from our cars 🚗💨 — and our kids breathe that air. Read why this matters for family health, and speak up for cleaner cars. #KidsHealth

Lower fuel efficiency standards pave the way for more pollution
Fuel efficient cars help drive a cleaner future. Recent changes to efficiency standards do the opposite.

The sample efficiency and parameter efficiency in this paper are astounding and a pretty good sign that there are better paths to capable AI than current LLMs
Again a pretty reasonable heuristic for this is “if an alien superintelligence read (within a small constant factor of) the entire written output of the human race how much extra work would you expect to have to put into not getting distracted and forgetting what you asked them to do”

i honestly believe that pursuing efficiency above all else is a death cult

He’s not wrong, but this is a great example of where Silicon Valley turbo-efficiency brain gets you. He woulda been a hell of a Stalinist.

As long as efficiency maximization is an economic and therefore a social good, we will steadily lose to the machines. Inefficiency is pro-human.

Making numbers go up isn’t compatible with human freedom. It’s time to flip the tables in how we determine progress.
