Æthelwald Moll, king of the Northumbrians, did battle against Oswine #OTD in 761, and after three days Moll prevailed and slew his rival. The battle took place at Ædwinesclif (Edwin’s Cliff), apparently below the Eildon Hills near Melrose, Scottish Borders. 📸Iain Russell #medievalsky

Bemersyde Hill standing stone with the Eildon Hills in the distance. Re-erected recently after being flattened by cattle. The name 'Bemersyde' likely derives from the Old English 'beorn', meaning 'warrior', and 'syde', meaning 'hill'.

Around the winter #solstice #IronAge communities would have been keenly aware of the year’s shortest day & longest night. At places like Eildon North daily life was shaped by the seasons, the land, & the steady return of light, long before the Roman fort of Trimontium was established below.

Another hilltop 360 for #HillfortsWednesday, this time from Mither Tap, Bennachie, Aberdeenshire, taken 2 weeks ago. I do declare that each Scottish hillfort I ascend is windier than the last, & this was definitely windier than Eildon Hill, which was pretty windy, tbf.
