The Hautman brothers have fascinated me since first hearing about them in Fargo thirty years ago. The offhand joke about them being the defacto winners of the duck stamp contest gets funnier every time one of them wins.

Their work has appeared on sixteen duck stamps to date for winning as many competitions. The Hautman’s independent wins number at seven, six and three for Jim, Joseph and Rob respectively. Treasured for his compositions, Jim’s ducks soar above the rest. He won one more stamp painting contest than his brother so naturally his duck work is deemed as best. Dawn Ultra’s opposite, Jim lathers oil paints on a duck’s back in place of dabbing it clean. Here’s a comfortable spot for the eye to land, the slightest strand gleaned through the reeds of the slightest season, a good enough reason as any to wet one’s beak, to raise one’s brush, to bleed for a minute down in the rush before taking off towards beguiling ponds and pools where, eventually, a man’s keel can even out, where he might even uncover a subject worth writing home about.

Steady rains of acrid turpentine are applied until hills stain and the blank canvas burns. Rock faces draw thin as pigmentation dries. The idiotic gulls and common terns that try in vain to roost in jutted crevices soon learn that oils crest over these quiet crags and die. Mountains and seas seem to incessantly cry that the earth’s wonders have been spurned. Rock faces draw thin as pigmentation dries. Diluted oils crest over muted peaks and die.
