Ok, current theory is it’s a skate (similar to a ray but not the same.) Those two fleshy bits on either side of the tail are pelvic fins. A ray would have just one lobe on either side.

Alternatively it’s a face hugger from Alien per @dtl.bsky.social 😅

Thank you all for the detective work! 🌿 🦑
What’s the Difference Between Stingrays and Skates?
Stingrays and skates are both elasmobranchs, meaning they are cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is made of cartilage instead of bone.

Have you heard of the thresher shark? It can whip its scythe-like tail to stun prey fish, often knocking out several fish with a single slap!
A thresher's average tail slap whips by at 14 meters/second (~50 kph) but they have been known to get close to 80 kph!

A Slap Upside the Head — Shark Research Institute
Thresher sharks are among the most impressive of elasmobranchs, their scythe-like tails nearly equaling their bodies in length.  Many hypotheses have been proposed for the function of these elongated…

1 of 3.
Last week I took part in a survey aiming to help us better understand our illusive marine neighbour, the Flapper Skate. The flapper skate is the worlds largest skate (!), a member of the shark family (elasmobranchs) which breeds within the sound of Jura MPA and Hopespot!

Diversity and Community Structure of Coastal Elasmobranchs in the French West Indies
Coastal elasmobranchs play key functional roles in Caribbean reef ecosystems, yet their populations have declined markedly across the region. To address major knowledge gaps in the French West Indies…

Map of life update
Sharks and Rays are the only surviving members of a group of fish known as the elasmobranchs, but there were other. I've added one, Cladoselache, on the top left.

Nice longread on how elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) have become much more central to marine conservation and fisheries management in the Northeast Atlantic, reflecting both the growing recognition of their vulnerability to overexploitation and the broader evolution toward ecosystem-based management

Abstract. At the inception of the ICES Journal of Marine Science, first published in 1926, elasmobranchs were largely peripheral to fisheries science. Beyo

I very, very much doubt that staff in an aquarium, who would have studied marine animals in depth (no pun intended) would be 'flummoxed' by a case of parthenogenesis in elasmobranchs... A group that this phenomenon is well known in.
I thought The Guardian was above sensationalism.
Grow up.

This animal is known by skull elements and gnarly teeth. Fossils are rare, in the sense that serrated, broad, teeth like this are found nowhere else in Mississippian elasmobranchs, and because it's fossils are very uncommon, despite it being found in a broad swath of North American rocks.
