All about the secret lives of seahorses!
Happy World Habitat Day 🧊

Even sea ice can provide valuable living space, particularly for the masses of diatoms growing underneath (hence the yellow stains). Krill will then feed on these microalgae, the same krill that whales often feast on in polar waters.

Happy World Animal Day 🪱

The bootlace worm is the ocean’s longest animal with confirmed lengths in excess of 30m (5-15m is more usual and claims of 55m have been made). They also produce a powerful neurotoxin that is effective against crabs and cockroaches.

This balsa wood raft was used during the 1947 kon-tiki expedition when a six man team sailed across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia. Proving it was possible for the people of Fatu Hiva to be descended from the South American continent.

A surreal experience that starts with a fisherman, near a coastal village in Thailand, rescuing an injured stranger. Only for that same stranger to take over the fisherman’s life when he disappears at sea.

These days, pelicans are best known for being big water birds with even bigger mouths. But during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, the mother pelican piercing her own chest, to feed her offspring with her own blood, was a Christian symbol of loving sacrifice.

Always be wary when long-spined sea urchins are around.
Their venom is, luckily, mild and non-fatal to humans, but those stinging spines are bound to hurt!

The mighty manta ray can boast a wingspan of nearly 7 metres!
Yet despite their colossal size, they feed on tiny zooplankton using specialised gill rakers. Hardly befitting of their alternative name, the “devil fish”.

That’s not an oyster emerging from those shells.
But you can find this rather odd revelation, along with fish in waistcoats and sharks with saddles being ridden like horses, in “The Pearl and the Pumpkin”, published in 1904.

Some designs are so good that they persist for millions of years.

This extinct sun star from the mid-Miocene (11.5-16 million years ago) and modern day sun star look pretty similar. Naturally, their exact inner workings would’ve worked in slightly different ways.
