New #blog! Describing #Diatoms!

I’ve spent over 25yrs learning about diatoms and one of the biggest lessons is learning about diatom #morphology. It’s the first essential step in #micropalaeontology. Learning to differentiate one taxa from another!

glass sponges have a melancholy story. ancient, impossibly-long-lived organisms, once widespread and fast-growing, now in permanent decline due to diatoms stealing all the free silica in seawater, the sponge reefs a shade of their former glory. like tolkien’s elves, if they were made of sharp sponge

Fantastic visit to Basel @biozentrum.unibas.ch this week hosted by the students from @cellarchlab.com lab! So much great science on display!

Look at this view (from one of the PI offices, top floor) and these beautiful lab pumpkins! 😅 #cilia #diatoms #chlamy @computingcaitie.bsky.social

10,000 Diatoms per 1 cm³
Diatoms are algae that generally live in water and are capable of photosynthesis. The largest of these tiny organisms are 1 millimeter in diameter, and there are approximately 10,000 of them in 1 cm³ of seawater.

Oh, I saw the triangle the other day without a source, it's just from the wikipedia page on diatoms.

Awww thanks, and thanks ☺️ this is great - pushing me out of my comfort zone for sure 🤣 I’m used to sketching sediment sections and silica microfossils (freshwater diatoms, sponges, phytoliths) - so things that are more structured and not so squishy 🤣🤣

Got some really diatom-y smelling water ready for our plankton diversity labs today in #limnology today! Excited to see what the students find. Our water samples are from two spring-fed reservoirs and two river-fed reservoirs. #diatoms #phytoplankton #zooplankton

I really do love smaller meetings / workshops that are genuinely interesting & friendly, and don’t get overwhelming!

Anyways, enjoyed putting this talk together on #diatoms in Lesotho 🇱🇸 🧪

Diatoms are one of my favourite creatures of our watery, blue world. Copepods are a close second. 🥰 "Why did the world have to be beautiful? And beneath that still, the eternal answer: No why; just is.” @mariapopova.bsky.social 🪸

RNA viruses as drivers of rapid diatom succession within a single bloom event
Abstract. Diatoms frequently dominate seasonal phytoplankton blooms and contribute ~40% of marine primary production. Viruses drive phytoplankton mortality
