The ancestors of these 140 million-year-old radiolaria single-celled fossils lived in Earth's oceans while the Moon's crust was creaking and cracking with tectonic forces. These microscopic beings swam under moonlight and sunlight, sensing their own astronomy.

On a related topic, @element115.bsky.social and I are trying to figure out what causes this blue sheen that was never visible on the ground and only seems to occur in space. Could it have something to do with that coating you mentioned?

Good catch!

Whats interesting is that the amount of blue tint seems to vary a lot with the phase angle.

It's possible that the blue color is always there, but at high phase angles the sun glint dominates and it looks more grey.

The Space Shuttle went through many design iterations during development. This is what the shuttle looked like in 1969. During this point in development North American Rockwell planned to use a crewed, reusable flyback booster to get the orbiter into space.
