#Elitism
When they railed against elites, they meant the elites who didn’t agree with them, not the elitism they practised themselves. State welfare was anathema to their idea of democracy because they said it would inevitably lead to communism.

it was the '"fucking weebs" genre of elitism', wasn't it?

It is a common sentiment, once I've seen and heard expressed directly to me (or just as often, directly AT me) many, many times over the years. A particularly insufferable and unjustifiable brand of elitism. Usually by the same folk who insist English scripts be peppered with Japanese words.

LRP is literally why I stopped getting involved with Japanese language learning communities. I've never seen any other language learning sub-group be so openly hostile toward each other. Wtf is it about Japanese and some hot-shit elitism that has people go absolutely bonkers? It's crazy.

If your audience primarily speaks one language and you're intentionally speaking a language they don't understand despite knowing how to communicate to them? You're being an asshole. Insisting on using Japanese names so the "normies" don't know what you're talking about is actual elitism.

The elitism based disconnection from reality is just dripping off of every word in that shit.
September 29, 2026 at 5:10 PM
So, there's this thing called language. It's a form of communication that requires both parties know what the words mean. If one side doesn't know the language, it's impossible to convey meaning. You wouldn't go to Japan and expect everyone to know German. But sure, this is "elitism"

Burn the entire fucking "Greek" system down. It was horrifying in the 1980s when I fled the U of IL because of it. Frats are rapey and kill boys in hazing rituals. Sororities are notorious for EDs. It's a mechanism of elitism, and antithetical to the so-called-meritocracy the university promises.

I don’t think the problem is so much the use of another language as much as the gatekeepy elitism of using a less accessible, original name. If you use the original Japanese name and act surprised when someone uses the title that’s in your shared native language, you are being a bit of a prick.

Like people say Apothecary Diaries, not Kusuriya no Hitorigoto. People say Frieren: Beyond's Journey End, not Sousou no Frieren, or *just* Frieren. Y'know? It's not anime elitism(???) or whatever it's just what people *know*. Because presumably, you are having a conversation about it.

Also, I’m pretty sure insisting on the Japanese title is actual elitism.

Elitism culture is everywhere….
A case that isn’t getting the headlines it deserves: an LSU student was raped by an LSU football player. He admitted it, but the school is still letting him play football.

How multiple systems have failed this young woman & why she went public to get the help she needs:

This has gone away in the days of simulcasts but when I did this it wasn’t because of elitism, it was because I became a fan of a series before it got licensed and got used to referring to the Japanese title before it received a English friendly name.
September 29, 2026 at 4:45 PM
It's not up to individuals to localize. They can use the original titles if they want to. Maybe "elitism" is the wrong word to describe his "Only Japanese people can use the original Japanese title. Everyone else is a loser who should be bullied." attitude.
September 29, 2026 at 4:31 PM
Also, calling a request for localization "elitism" is really funny, as for me that term is suited better as preferential treatment for the *original* form of a thing, not an adaptation of it.

Expecting things we consume and purchase to be of reasonable quality isn't snobbery or elitism! And when quality improves it benefits everyone.

Too many companies now treat customers and users with nearly open contempt.

Though, I think the core problem is that society took the fact that they made a ton of money from being in the right place as the right time that they must be right about everything.

Theres a lot more that contributed to this than just greed — credentialism, elitism, meritocracy, etc. all…
September 29, 2026 at 3:53 PM
Felt sheepish because elitism is bad, and I think if, say, things like human-created music or writing becomes a niche interest, swamped by the flood of slop, who gravitates toward one or the other won't only be a question of taste but also access, time, money, privilege etc. And yet...

PRIESTHOOD: A CONFRATERNITY FOR MEN CLAIMING SACRED PRIVILEGE. A priestly class is established with exclusive access to what is presented as sacred food and privilege. When religious authority creates a special class with privileges unavailable to outsiders, that is institutionalized religious elitism

This "fucking weebs" genre of elitism is so silly. Why should the English version of titles be the standard? Why should MAL use the English names for anime by default? He doesn't even provide a good reason for this stance.

a vote for trump is a vote for racism, elitism and authoritarianism.

What ! No elitism in healthcare between those that can afford it and those that can’t ? Jeez, anyone would think the US wants what every other country on the planet has. Think if I worked in those insurance companies I’d be starting a nursing care course or signing on at a medical college ?

It’s ‘brave’ academics looking down on the trades again. Nice work Anna.
I sincerely hope your HVAC doesn’t need a trained ‘vocational’ worker to get your heat back on this winter.
This elitism is rampant in both parties. Knock it off and respect others, Anna!
