Today we celebrate #WomenPhysiciansDay and the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell – who in 1849 became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the US. Her courage didn’t just open a door; it paved the way for generations of women.

Hi Jennie, I've moved from X to #bsky & am so pleased to see that you're here. Still working on #ElizabethBlackwell & #ACuriousHerbal, & just made a petit breakthrough on the process of its making. Your book sounds amazing. Looking forward to its publication.

According to #ACuriousHerbal, these little blooms belong to a plant called Mouse Ears. I'm over the moon to see them thriving on neglect in the front garden. #ElizabethBlackwell #botany #herbal

In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first U.S. woman to earn a medical degree, proving women belonged in medicine. Today, gender bias still exists in healthcare. How do we keep pushing forward?

Found these sweeties in a planter in my back garden.
They remind me of #fungi I used to see here & there when I was a child. Possibly(?) similar to one that #ElizabethBlackwell etched separately, which I found pasted into back of a copy of #ACuriousHerbal in #Caius library, #Cambridge.

It's not as venerable, nor as mysteriously bound. But, for me, of great interest is Newcastle's copy of #ACuriousHerbal, 18thC by #ElizabethBlackwell.
#ICYMI In Case you missed our latest blog post - Did you know we have books bound in the 15thC by 'The Demon Binder' and 'The Dragon Binder' in our collections?

If you're wondering who they are or how they got their names this blog post is for you:

Last year on #IWD2018 I breakfasted with some amazing #NBT women @young_andrea @rachelafielding. Today I’m in bed post ICU night shift.

I would not be a doctor without pioneering women like Bristol’s own #ElizabethBlackwell #InternationalWomensDay

I voted for Southmead Hospital to be named after Dr Elizabeth Blackwell, a shame it wasn’t. But here’s to her.

To the many enslaved women who passed through our city, you are not forgotten.

Bristol is the birthplace of Dr Elizabeth Blackwell MD. Every now & then I pop by her home. Glad to see the graffiti gone. She was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the US. #ElizabethBlackwell #WomeninMedicine

DYK #ElizabethBlackwell (d.1910), 1st U.S. woman to earn a medical degree, & other leaders of social purity movements, carried on the Christian campaign against #SoloSex. They believed servants led astray innocent middle- & upper-class kids by teaching it to them.

For all her learning, #ElizabethBlackwell, the first woman to graduate in medicine in modern times in the USA, nevertheless also campaigned against #SoloSex throughout her career. She also blamed servants for teaching it to their masters' children.
