👇🎯 And seeing colleagues enthusiastically embrace this as a positive development in research & mentoring has been once of the most infuriating & demoralizing developments in my entire academic career.
i think we were already over-producing - and the incentives were toward producing a particular kind of inference - before AI came on the scene. the possibility that now people will be expected to produce 90 AI-aided papers per year or something is a collapse of the values at the center of the system

Since then, my London Violence Reduction Unit has helped prevent violence before it happens, investing in young people through mentoring, sport, music and targeted support.

And recently, we celebrated a major milestone: one million Londoners reached.

I think this is already to some extent a real thing just we don't really acknowledge it. In fact some kinds of teaching or mentoring are more or less just facilitation of student achieving their potential in a way that looks closest to care labour. This is not a new idea (it's from Socrates!) but...
In the future, professors will be judged not by output but by their ability to care and nurture

This will be deeply unpopular in some quarters
And where will new professors come from without RAs. But clearly our institutions consider professors a nuisance and find this development a welcome excuse to stop pretending to care about that

Oppenheimer is a good example of why I think research, mentoring, and teaching reinforce each other rather than compete. Great research makes mentoring richer, and great mentoring builds the teams that make research stronger.

Research, mentoring, and teaching
Thus, choosing between great research or great mentorship is a false choice: One can succeed at both or is likely to succeed at neither.

the thing is...none of that was *for* Via, it was for Stolas.

mentoring Via, covering for Blitz at the auction - everything Vassago has done so far has been for Stolas and i think that distinction is important because of this scene right here. Blitz almost fell prey to doing the exact same thing.

My students. They are kind, thoughtful, eager to learn & often very funny. Do sone have financial and/or academic challenges? Yes. But they rise to the challenge with the right kind of mentoring.
I like them because they are, by and large, good humans.

I'll add that one job is six figures and the other I don't know yet and so far all these jobs involve science, teaching, presenting, and mentoring. Can't know where I'll land yet but I'm definitely intrigued by non-tenured science positions right now

God this all reminds me of the immediate post-Great Recession era so much. Hiring managers complaining nobody is qualified and they got too many resumes. Everyone felt overworked and nobody wanted to spend time interviewing or *gasp* mentoring.
“A 22-year-old with an undergraduate degree in biology has applied for 511 jobs and counting. She was recently rejected from a role at Whole Foods after being ‘interviewed’ by a chatbot named Sage.”
Bleak, bleak, bleak.

Among all the linked and stacked crises of our time this may be one of the bleakest.

Just had the 'workload' conv with my HoD. Does anyone have a job available for a grumpy, sad professor who apparently has no value bc I'm not on any big grants or teaching 6,000,000 undergrads? I can get 'supported severance' though. Mentoring, service to community are of no value at all. #help

I found that tech and data leadership role feels like a lot of the parts of academia I loved (collaboration, mentoring, teaching, strategizing) but without the stuff I don't like (competition etc.)

Also, I still partner with schools to do academic mentoring too.
