It’s always the same three Elmids found on any survey here in the East Midlands, Oulimnius tuberculatus, Elmis aenea and Limnius volckmari. Also present Orectochilus villosus and Nebrioporus elegans. #Elmidae #Coleoptera #Gyrinidae #Dytiscidae

Hinton: And lots of other insects too. But beetles were his favourite. Among beetles it was the family Elmidae that was his real favourite. Smith: Did you have to compete with beetles for his favourite? Hinton: My sister often said that he would’ve loved us more if we had six legs. He had an office at the university that was very high. The ceiling must have been about 16 feet high and the walls were all lined with shelves and he had a stepladder so he could get at them. The walls were covered with hundreds of boxes and each box would have papers reprints. This was before Xerox machines, right? It would have reprints of papers from journals and on the box there would be the name of the genus of insect that the reprint was about or maybe the family. There were hundreds of these boxes. When he died, we sold them to the University of Florida for 10,000 pounds. Among those boxes there was one box, it was a bit smaller and was next to the door on a lower shelf, on that box it said not insects. That was the rest of his life. That had things like letters from his children.

We certainly saw plenty of immature insects during our recent aquatic sampling trip, but we also found lots of adults...like this sweet riffle beetle.

Day 118: Another microscope pic from my uni days.
This is the aquatic larva of a Riffle Beetle (family Elmidae). These critters have gills tucked away in a little flap right at the tip of their abdomen, which can be opened or closed depending on conditions.

When few fish, I pay more attention to the invertebrates, like these tiny beetles, a natty Nebrioporus elegans (predaceous diving beetle) & jewel-like riffle beetles (Elmidae).
Also Water Boatman (Callicorixa).
Am mystified as to what these dark ovoids are that I commonly find under stones??

Went to get some freshwater limpets for my shrimp aquarium. They are *so very smol*.

Also brought back a riffle beetle, we’ll call him Steve. Steve would not hold still for pictures.
A stereo microscope (20X magnification) view of a limpet, likely Ferrissia spp., a type of freshwater snail with a flattened, dome-like shell. Its eyes and sensory tentacles can be seen on the left side through the semi-transparent edge of the shell. Pictured is Steve. Steve is a riffle beetle, family Elmidae, also seen through 20X magnification under a microscope. Steve won’t hold still. Steve is halfway out of frame in this pic and trucking hard. Now Steve is in frame, but out of focus fuzzy. And Steve is now a little out of frame but in better focus. It’ll do.
