Continuing the #ElyCathedral theme for #stunday here's a night shot of the tower and some of the surrounding historic buildings.

A deserted street at night leads toward a grand Gothic cathedral tower, flanked by historic stone buildings. Street lamps cast small pools of warm light along the empty road, while bare trees line the left side. The black-and-white treatment heightens the dramatic, moody atmosphere — all deep shadows and stark architectural detail against a dark sky.

To finish this second set from #ElyCathedral, here's a view from inside the octagonal Lantern in the roof. The painted panels open and give you this view. The glass and painting is Victorian.

#OMsystemOM1 #fourthirds #Olympus7_14f4

#photography #churchphotography
A richly decorated Gothic cathedral interior, viewed from an elevated angle looking down the nave. The upper portion features ornate panels, painted in deep blues and golds, adorned with a row of gilded angel figures in individual Gothic arched niches — each angel depicted in flowing robes, some bearing musical instruments, wings, or raised in gestures of worship. Below the angels runs a decorative frieze with Gothic tracery, crowns, and monograms (likely "IHS" Christograms). A grand pointed Gothic arch frames the view downward into the long nave, where rows of wooden pews stretch into the distance and tiny figures of visitors can be seen far below. The vaulted ceiling fans outward in elegant fan vaulting. To the upper left and lower right, vivid stained glass windows glow in reds, blues, greens, and golds, casting jewel-toned light into the space. The overall impression is of extraordinary Victorian-era Gothic craftsmanship — this appears to be Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England, particularly recognizable by its famous painted octagon.

An aerial view looking down from the ceiling of a grand Gothic cathedral, revealing the full sweep of its interior. Elaborate fan-vaulted stone ceilings radiate outward in intricate ribbed patterns, framing tall stained glass windows filled with rich blues, reds, and greens. Far below, rows of wooden pews and chairs are arranged around a central octagonal wooden structure on a ornate tiled floor. The wide-angle perspective creates a dramatic sense of depth and symmetry, with carved stonework, sculpted figures, and gilded architectural details visible throughout.

#LookingUp in #ElyCathedral at the octagonal Lantern.

#OMsystemOM1 #fourthirds #Olympus7_14f4

#photography #churchphotography #architecturephotography
A breathtaking upward view of the ornate vaulted ceiling of a Gothic cathedral, featuring a dramatic star-shaped central lantern tower with radiating stone ribs fanning outward in all directions. The ceiling is richly decorated in deep greens and golds with intricate painted patterns. Surrounding the central octagonal lantern are multiple bays filled with vibrant stained glass windows in blues, reds, and greens. Stone carved figures and decorative sculptures line the walls and arches. At the bottom centre, a gilded mosaic or painted apse depicts a religious scene with Christ in Majesty surrounded by figures. The overall perspective creates a dizzying, kaleidoscopic symmetry. This appears to be Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England — specifically its famous 14th-century Octagon and Lantern Tower, considered one of the great engineering feats of medieval architecture.

A handheld #vertorama of #ElyCathedral with the Romanesque arches and Victorian painted ceiling.

#OMsystemOM1 #fourthirds #Olympus7_14f4

#photography #churchphotography #architecturephotography
This is a dramatic panoramic interior shot of a grand Gothic cathedral, taken with an extreme wide-angle lens that creates a striking barrel distortion effect. The view looks down the nave toward the chancel/altar, with the ceiling dramatically bowing outward on both sides due to the panoramic view distortion. The central focus is a richly decorated ceiling panel running the length of the nave, painted in deep golds, greens, and reds with elaborate figural scenes — likely medieval or Victorian-era painted panels depicting biblical narratives. Flanking the nave are massive Norman Romanesque rounded arches in cool grey stone, stacked in tiers, creating a rhythmic, almost hypnotic repetition that curves away on either side. Stained glass windows are visible on the right. Rows of simple wooden chairs fill the nave floor, and ornate mosaic floor medallions are visible at the bottom. The overall effect is almost kaleidoscopic — the architecture feels like it's folding in on itself, giving the image a surreal, tunnel-like quality despite being a straight shot down the nave.

Interior of a Gothic cathedral, looking along a side aisle or chapel. Tall, richly coloured stained glass windows — depicting biblical scenes and figures in reds, blues, greens and golds — dominate the right-hand wall, their light casting vivid pools of amber, red and yellow onto the ancient worn stone floor slabs, many of which appear to be medieval grave markers. To the left, Gothic pointed arches recede into shadow, and a recumbent stone effigy (likely a tomb monument) is visible against the far wall. The overall atmosphere is one of age, reverence, and dramatic, jewel-like light.
