🧵3 posts. The Dutch River is a man-made waterway in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In the 1620s, King Charles I commissioned Dutch civil engineer Cornelius Vermuyden to drain the Hatfield Chase marshes and divert the River Don directly into the River Ouse. The artificial cut, completed around 1628
The photo captures a view of the Dutch River, an artificial waterway located near the town of Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is a 1620s re-engineered section of the River Don. King Charles I tasked the prominent Dutch civil engineer Cornelius Vermuyden with draining the marshlands of Hatfield Chase. Vermuyden diverted the river by 10 miles to empty into the River Ouse at Goole rather than its original path to the River Trent. This project transformed the region's agricultural landscape and laid the groundwork for the modern port town, While historically utilized by small coal barges to carry fuel from the South Yorkshire Coalfield, the modern river is highly hazardous. It connects directly to the Ouse via Ocean Lock and experiences extreme, sudden tidal surges and volatile direction shifts. Image: Steven Ruffles CC BY 2,0

A few reflections on my favourite #Fen #heron.

A grey heron in the reeds by a river. The water is pretty still, so there is a good reflection. The same photo rotated 180° so the reflected bird is at the top. It is very similar, for obvious reasons.

A dugout boat which was found during excavations on the banks of the River Witham, near Fiskerton in Lincolnshire. Dating to the Iron Age, the boat was worked from a single oak tree trunk. Now part of the collections at Lincoln Museum. 📸 My own. #Woodensday #LincolnMuseum
