i think there is a big external prestige afforded to the people who "get" to do those embargo reviews for major AAA games but i highkey wish that would go away too. it's a huge amount of pressure. to this day i run across random comments from people still mad at me about my tlou2 embargo day review.

if you want to experience a game in the way that a regular degular person does, you need to do the opposite of what a day one embargo review does. you need to take your time with it, explore, try things, not just race to the finish. i never read day one embargo reviews because they're not reality.

i know this is a dream of a culture change that will probably not happen for another decade or so. but, maybe it will as publications increasingly rely on other income streams besides advertising (which demands traffic, which therefore demands stuff like reviews & huge guides packages at embargo)

playing a game for embargo will always make me kind of hate the game. you're crunching for days, maybe weeks, and then you're forced to summarize that experience into a piece of writing, also on a crunch. it's also that you're having an experience no one else will have--no one plays games like that.

but i think we all know and have known for a very long time that even the reviewers who manage to beat a game in time for embargo don't always end up agreeing with their own opinion that they crammed in a fugue state. the best critical work happens in the weeks & months following that wild-ass rush.

i’ll happily eat my hat if they put an arms embargo on israel and reverse sanctions on iran but i’m not sure the people of palestine, iran, and the global south impacted by oil shortages can wait til january 21st
