7/ One more thing if you work with YouTube analytics: YouTube changed how views are counted on August 24. We added `engagedViews` to Post Analytics and Social Analytics so you can continue using the previous view methodology in your reporting.

Their API documentation stated it was "past the first 4 seconds" in june '25, before being updated to be "past the initial few seconds" in august '25

also, email sent to API devs about this change seems to imply that this metric is staying internally, so I think this is purely a UI pumping exercise

engagedViews (core metric)
The number of times the channel's videos have been viewed past the initial seconds.

views (core metric)
This metric represents different numbers in different types of reports. This is a core metric and is subject to the Deprecation Policy.

YouTube Analytics and Reporting APIs

If you own a channel or you are authorized to access data for a channel, beginning August 24, you can query both the updated views and “Engaged Views” across both Targeted Queries and Bulk Reports. The views field will then reflect the new counting logic for all content formats, while “Engaged Views” (available as engagedViews for Targeted Queries and engaged_views for Bulk Reports) will remain available to support users who require the previous version of the views metric.

YouTube rolled out Engaged Views on Aug 24. A cruelty clip autoplaying in a feed now counts as a view from frame one, even if the viewer swipes past. The algorithm ranks by views. Every swipe pays the upload. #YouTubeBloodMoney #EngagedViews
