As the #Owls are playing tonight, here's a #WednesdayOwl on a... Friday!

And to honour our hosts, #BurnleyFC, here is a faultless yet really fooking boring claret picture.

- #EnnioCalabria - #Owl - 1965
- #MarkRothko (1903–1970) - Red on Maroon - 1959

Now, here's a belter of a picture. Broadly, it looks like a raised platform with a red cloth draped over it, and a slate grey background panel behind the platform. Standing on the platform is a very roughly drawn owl, not seeming to give many fooks that a strong beam of light is pointing at it from somewhere behind us (the viewer) and to our left. The owl is depicted in ballpoint squiggles, and roughly patched with greys and blacks. There is a slight yellow hint of a beak. Its shadow is sharply cast on the background panel, picking out its ear tufts. There are three small green plants on the red cloth, and what looks a bit like three footlight shades. But the owl! The owl stands there like the proudest Shakespearean thespian! It's right foot forward, but with heel slightly raised. It draws its weight back on its left foot, and draws itself up to its left shoulder. It stares us right in the eye. I know this look. It is the look of an actor just about to launch into a soliloquy. Look, I don't know, right? I've sat in the Rothko room at Tate Modern, and gazed at the massive artwork panels gathered there, and I've mused, and I've pondered, and I've mindfulnessed, and I've tried to do every damned thing to get this stuff. And in the end, I did feel a little mesmerised... But I think I would have felt equally as mesmerised staring at the wall between the paintings. I don't know. They're big, and they're impressive, and I really don't mind them, they're kind-of attractive. Like this one: It's a big landscape-rectangular field of colours from a narrow colour palette. A bit darker at the extremes, lighter toward the centre. There are various reds. I'm terrible at colours, but I think I see claret, maroon, burgundy, with a rough rectangular frame of relief depicted in pinky rhubarby rose tones. This frame is hard up against the top and bottom edges of the canvas, but allowed a little room in from the horizontal sides. Within the frame the rosiness almost gets to white. But... should art have the effect of making you not mind it at the same time as being impressed by it? I don't know. Ask someone cleverer than me to explain why Rothko's Seagram panels are art, rather than decorative art, or mere decoration. All I know is this: Like Rothko's Seagram panels, Burnley FC are currently good, and impressive, but dull. And life should be more than this. Art should be more than this. Football should be more than this. We should be more than this, for the simple reason that we could be, if we only dared to try.
