Sorry, #SWFC family. My fault we're three-nil down at Middlesbrough already.

- I didn't post a #WednesdayOwl
- My lucky #Owls socks are still in the wash

Let's see if posting this picture of a #BarnOwl (who looks like I feel right now) can magic a 2nd-half rally.

How do you do, fellow #Owls?

This #WednesdayOwl helped us come back from three goals down yesterday.

It hath powers we cannot fathom.

Please join me in reposting it whenever #SWFC are in need of help from realms beyond the sight of science.

#SWFC v #LUFC

#MichaelAtkin - #BarnOwl
#Art #Arte #Painting #Owl #Buho #Hibou
A simple depiction of a barn owl in brown and white, standing on a dark rock or tree stump. The owl is facing to our left, but has its head turned to look at us. The technique is figurative, but not overly so. There is some writing at the bottom, which I presume was by the artist, but I can't read it.

A jug in the form of an owl. The owl is decorated with a swirling orangey-brown marbling effect, which feels like a nod towards feathers. The owl has a plump torso, and a detachable head with two big staring eyes. It looks a bit startled.

The head of an owl, in browny black, its eyes with big bloodshot whites and brown pupils with pierced centres. It is staring up and to our left, with its beak slightly open. It looks like it is horrified by whatever it is seeing. (Owl Mask, Nisga’a (Niska) British Columbia, ca.1850-1880 National Museum of the American Indian (via Stephen Ellcock))

A big round owl! It is dark brown with sandy coloured highlights, with blue eyes, beak and markings. The background is inky blue with a sort-of gold shimmer. I don't know if this owl is meant to be a juvenile, but with its big eyes and chubby legs, it has a childlike air. I want to stroke it. Can I stroke it?

A handsome brown and white #BarnOwl sits on a bare branch, looking to our left. There's an orange glow in the sky, and lights in the windows of a few buildings in the distance. It looks very cold. I don't know much about the emotional life of #owls, but this one looks a bit sad.

We have an owl. A bloody great big owl. Absolute unit. Grey shades all over, except for a curve of sandy brown over its left shoulder. It is in flight, going from our right to our left, filling the frame with wings curved on the downbeat. Its body is patterned - just beyond speckled, but not quite spotted. Its great white disk of a face looks at us, as if it were shocked to see us a moment ago, but is now over it. A grey fringe around the chin and cheeks. Grey eyeshadow. And grey nosebridge leading down into a black and grey beak. It is a convincing but artistic rendition of an owl, and I love it.

A proud owl (made of acrylic) stands upright, its body facing to our left but its head turned to look us square in the eye. It is brown, with black and white wings, and big piercing, hypnotic black eyes. A big, hairy, sandy coloured pig looks out of its dark pigsty at the wintry landscape during a snow flurry. It is turned slightly away from us, so we see its bum more than its face, but I bet it's think 'nope, not today'.

Look, this is a crudely rendered owl, okay? But what a charmer! In shocking cerise, with blue eyes and little ear tufts. Dots up the the breast, stripes on the left wing, which is closest to us. The other wing is held a little open in a slightly bossy manner. A bit of blue plant behind. Maybe some sort of shell in front? I don't care about those things. I love owls, and this one's a belter.

A depiction of the Réunion Owl, which became extinct before it could be properly described. So maybe an imagining of the bird. It's a bluey sort-of grey and white, it has two feather 'horns' or 'ears' atop its head, and it has a slightly tinged facial disk with yellow eyes. It looks at us, seemingly surprised, up there among the leaves on the branch of a tree. The style is quite broad and dreamy (in a #VanGogh-like kinda way), yet the detail is still great. A belter.

A grey owl with horn tufts and orange eyes looks down from a branch, with a worried look on its face. I don't know if owls experience worry, though? Anyway, this is a dark painting. Possibly night-time, but maybe just a deep dark wood. The picture is kinda rough, with big blobs of khaki colour making the shapes of the forest canopy, but it is clear what we are looking at. We are looking at an owl, and that is always good enough for me.

I can't think of owt more beautiful in this world than a #BarnOwl. Unless it's two barn #owls, obvs.

#NeilCox - "We've Got Our Eyes On You"

On a solid wooden beam sit two beautiful barn #owls, side-by-side. They are bathed in bright light from above, standing out against the gloomy background of the barn. The #owl on the left has its back to us, but has twisted its neck around to its left. The #bird on the right is facing us, but is looking at the same thing as the other one, somewhere behind us and to our left. Maybe a rustling mouse in the corner of the barn? Both #birds have all the lovely creamy-tan plumage of the adult #BarnOwl, but I suspect these are recently fledged juveniles that are not yet ready for full-time life in the outside world. They are painted in a realistic manner, but with a slight tinge of cartoon around the face. My heart!

I don't know nuffink about #art, but this looks a bit Japanesey to me. In the branches of a tree sits a #BarnOwl (I think), its body pointing to our left but its face looking over its left shoulder squarely at us. Its left wing is sort-of drooping down - I hope it's just resting like that, and not broken. The owl and the branches of the tree are figurative - and now I look closer, the tree's branches and trunk look a bit like a human sitting on the ground, with the left knee raised and the owl sitting on the left arm of the human tree. Is that a nipple on the trunk? Or a wound? And are those a pair of catlike eyes behind the owl? Maybe I'm imagining all that? Anyway, apart from some gold and brown patches of leaves here and there, the tree's foliage is all blue, and behind the main tree are some blue stripes of different but regimented thickness, which could be more trees. And all this is set against a fuzzy coppery background. It's ace, is this painting! (Sorry, I'm hopeless at this. Ask someone who knows sumfink about art, maybe?) Against a lusciously dark background of greens (emerald, bottle and British racing), two rather wobbly looking swans glide toward us. They are undeniably swans, but the depiction is just messy enough that I wouldn't want to say for sure if they're Bewick, mute or whooper. Or maybe they're swans from another continent, which is why I don't recognise them? Anyway the one in front is pressing towards us with curiosity, while the one behind is dawdling, with its neck arching over so that it can look down at the water... maybe to adore its own reflection? The green water is rippled, but we can still see the roughed reflection of the birds. The water and background have been messily drawn, but nicely so, and we can see in the top left the trunks of some silver birches. It's a belter of picture, this one. Really it is.

As the #Owls are playing tonight, here's a #WednesdayOwl on a... Friday!

And to honour our hosts, #BurnleyFC, here is a faultless yet really fooking boring claret picture.

- #EnnioCalabria - #Owl - 1965
- #MarkRothko (1903–1970) - Red on Maroon - 1959

#art #arte #painting
#SWFC #BFC #BURSHW #EFL
Now, here's a belter of a picture. Broadly, it looks like a raised platform with a red cloth draped over it, and a slate grey background panel behind the platform. Standing on the platform is a very roughly drawn owl, not seeming to give many fooks that a strong beam of light is pointing at it from somewhere behind us (the viewer) and to our left. The owl is depicted in ballpoint squiggles, and roughly patched with greys and blacks. There is a slight yellow hint of a beak. Its shadow is sharply cast on the background panel, picking out its ear tufts. There are three small green plants on the red cloth, and what looks a bit like three footlight shades. But the owl! The owl stands there like the proudest Shakespearean thespian! It's right foot forward, but with heel slightly raised. It draws its weight back on its left foot, and draws itself up to its left shoulder. It stares us right in the eye. I know this look. It is the look of an actor just about to launch into a soliloquy. Look, I don't know, right? I've sat in the Rothko room at Tate Modern, and gazed at the massive artwork panels gathered there, and I've mused, and I've pondered, and I've mindfulnessed, and I've tried to do every damned thing to get this stuff. And in the end, I did feel a little mesmerised... But I think I would have felt equally as mesmerised staring at the wall between the paintings. I don't know. They're big, and they're impressive, and I really don't mind them, they're kind-of attractive. Like this one: It's a big landscape-rectangular field of colours from a narrow colour palette. A bit darker at the extremes, lighter toward the centre. There are various reds. I'm terrible at colours, but I think I see claret, maroon, burgundy, with a rough rectangular frame of relief depicted in pinky rhubarby rose tones. This frame is hard up against the top and bottom edges of the canvas, but allowed a little room in from the horizontal sides. Within the frame the rosiness almost gets to white. But... should art have the effect of making you not mind it at the same time as being impressed by it? I don't know. Ask someone cleverer than me to explain why Rothko's Seagram panels are art, rather than decorative art, or mere decoration. All I know is this: Like Rothko's Seagram panels, Burnley FC are currently good, and impressive, but dull. And life should be more than this. Art should be more than this. Football should be more than this. We should be more than this, for the simple reason that we could be, if we only dared to try.

For our #Sunderland guests, here's a picture of a #shipyard that looks a bit like their proper badge.

A small black bowl decorated with a coppery-orange design of a rather surprised looking owl. They were knocking out some cracking stuff in the olden days, intit. A big, red, blocky, crudely drawn cargo ship, a bit like the one on the proper old Sunderland club badge, sits against a blue gray background, with four spindly cranes fussing around it. The ground between us and the dock is plain white, with dozens of tiny little Lowrylike figures milling back and forth. There are some tiny white seagulls flying high around the ship. (Well, I assume the people and birds are normal size, but they are far away, and dwarfed by the mahoosive ship.) "When I draw, influences from the past spring into my head. The Shipyard is one of those pieces where I am revisiting my past; I think to bring it into the present. The shipyards from my childhood are long gone, but their presence in my town was strong and those memories remain. I remember being not long out of school and starting work; I couldn’t believe how huge those ships were, like towering monoliths dwarfing the people on the ground. You could only ever stand in the shadows of these enormous feats of engineering, and then, as now, I marvel at the industry and community of people who worked to build these beautiful vessels." – Mackenzie Thorpe.

#RobertGreenhalf - "Norfolk Barn #Owl"

I've always been astonished by the size of #BarnOwl wings - captured beautifully here.
#Art #Birds
A beautiful barn owl hoverhunts for voles on its surprisingly large pale-cream wings, at the messy margin of a neat bare brown field that has been ploughed to white-tinged rows. A ditch zigzags straight away from us on the right, leading our eyes to a river, and on its far banks the outline of an English church and... summer trees? But on the nearside the trees are bare. Seagulls forage on the field, with a few taking flight. But it's daylight, and barn owls only hunt in the day when the nights are too short. So I don't know what season it is. The style is very neat and precise, but not photorealistic. I bloody love this painting.

- Tom Palmore (b1945, USA) - 'Santa Fe Opera' - 2021

This picture is more the suggestion of an owl than an owl entire. Its outstretched wing and tail feathers are long daubs; the rest of its plumage mere squiggles; its talons but doodles. The face is more solid, among which the beak is depicted by its absence rather than its presence. The grey unfocused bird hangs in the air against a blank white background. Only the two focused eyes are allowed colour: chestnut brown, staring at some unfortunate vole or lemming, no doubt. Flipping brilliant. Four beautiful yellow canaries perch on a wooden stand, with another canary in front of them on a stand of its own. They all look like they are chirping at each other. Each has one beady little black eye on show. Maybe the one in front is the conductor? I don't know. The backdrop is a curtain of Sheffield-Wednesday blue, with many folds. On the lower right, the curtain has been pulled aside a little to show a background with trees, hills and a red-orange sky.

In honour of our guests ( #DerbyCounty) here is a ram in bronze.

- #EwaldMataré - Ram's head doorknob

#Art #Arte #Owls #DecorativeArt #DCFC
A brown and white #TawnyOwl looks down at us with big black eyes from its perch on a softly mossy green branch. The background is just about discernible - it looks like the owl is in a bright spot in a dappled forest, but we can't tell if it's sunlight or moonlight. An intricate depiction of a ram in bronze. There is a graceful long convex curve flowing from the ram's mouth and snout, along the length of its face and splitting into two along its horns, which curve right round til their ends are pointing upward near the creature's eyes. This is figurative rather than realistic, and all the more beautiful for it. Elegant, is the word. Get in.

#RichardSpare - "Bright Robin" - 2012

#Art #Arte #Painting #Birds
#SheffieldWednesday v #BristolCity

Here's a rather sheepish-looking owl with horns/eartufts. Figuratively depicted (rather than literal), this owl is standing up straight, with its wings hanging by its sides. From its chest to its knees, it is sandy with white teardrops for texture. Each wing has one long doodle of a brown feather, with white fringing. It is standing before some rudimentary representations of trees, and behind that is a flat field of rusty red, with a hazy yellow-orange sun in the upper left corner. But the eyes! The eyes (carrot orange, with big black pupils) are looking up and to the bird's right, making it look like it is receiving a ticking off from a teacher. Brilliant. A little robin redbreast, perched on a twig. This is a representation, more than faithful reproduction. The robin's head, back and wings are brown, with orange strenghtening to red from the bird's cheeks to its chest. Between these there is a snake of pale blue, with a black dot for an eye at the top of the blue. The background, the twig and the bird's rump are all the same mottled grey-white. I can't decide if the bird looks proud or tearful, but I am autistic so these things are a mystery to me, really.
