'In 1860, an enslaved man named Sheppard Peek was listed among the possessions of William Peek, a white man in Crawfordville. His value was placed at $1,400.

More than a century and a half later, Sheppard’s great-great-granddaughter, Keisha Lance Bottoms, was elected governor of Georgia.'

Keisha Lance Bottoms is the great-great-granddaughter of an enslaved man named Sheppard Peek.

She will soon live in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, mere miles from where he was enslaved, as the first-ever Black woman elected Governor.

Just imagine being so desperate to win the support of racists that you argue that your own ancestors being enslaved was actually a good thing

I don’t think people really appreciate how radical and imaginative a movement abolition really was. It was an idea with implications that went well beyond the enslaved, and they knew it.
Again, what is fundamental about the Reconstruction Amendment is: you have a set of political and civil rights because you are a person, with an inherent dignity, and a political community owes everyone within that political community these basic rights. That was the revolution of Reconstruction.

Go vote.

For the Continental and Union soldiers, for the enslaved who broke their bonds, for the workers on the picket line, for the women in hunger strikes, for the freedom riders, for all who went before you who bled and suffered to give YOU the right to vote,

Go vote.

Correct. Also, 2nd Amendment. Those “well regulated militias”? For rounding up escaped enslaved humans and quashing rebellious enslaved people’s uprisings.
