#Enso
Como ya comenté, cualquier evento extremo que esté pasando o vaya a pasar en España no tendrá mucho que ver con El Niño, sino con el caos climático debido al calentamiento global.

Tomohon kembali diguyur hujan. Taratara, Woloan, dan sejumlah wilayah lain di tanah Minahasa ikut merasakan basahnya langit.

Tetapi El Niño masih menguat.

BoM’s latest ENSO chart has the El Niño close to record highs…a full two months ahead of the previous high in 2015. Importantly, BoM notes all models forecast the tropical to keep warming through spring, possibly peaking in summer. How big will this thing get?

Here’s how much the Eastern Pacific has changed since January. The Equatorial region warms/ cools due to El Niño La Niña cycles. ENSO 3.4 has warmed ~4C since Jan.

Interesting aside for #aotearoa: the models here are not showing a strong signal in any direction. We could get a pronounced summer and autumn drought, especially on the eastern side of both islands, but those often arrive in years where ENSO is neutral.

The more obvious takeaway I see is a […]

It’s worthwhile to look into the past for clues of how to prepare and respond. But past experiences will not help us understand the scope of the severity of climate change on top of the strongest El Niño since we were able to measure ENSO (possibly of all-time).

Prolonged El Nino may hurt marine ecosystem: INCOIS
The current El Niño conditions are likely to remain dominant until at least April 2027, with probabilities ranging between 80% and 100% and could adversely affect the marine ecosystem, according to scientists at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) on Monday. El Niño refers to the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and represents the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Such conditions are known to weaken the Indian summer monsoon, often affecting rainfall patterns and, in turn, the country’s agriculture and economy. Beyond its influence on rainfall, El Niño can trigger stronger and longer-lasting marine heatwaves across the northern Indian Ocean that can disrupt marine ecosystems, damage coral reefs and impact fisheries. In contrast, La Niña, characterised by unusually cool waters in the equatorial Pacific, generally supports stronger monsoon conditions over India. Scientists say El Niño has strengthened and is expected to remain strong through the August 2026-March 2027 period. Its persistence is likely to influence ocean conditions across the North Indian Ocean, leading to higher sea surface temperatures, increased upper-ocean heat content, stronger water-column stratification and widespread marine heatwaves. Marine heatwave conditions are already widespread across...

Very thorough! Larger theoretical question: is there an extreme along current longer term warming trajectories where ENSO ‘breaks’ or shifts to a novel impact regime?
September 28, 2026 at 2:46 PM
Jeff mentioned that the underlying driver of the warming ocean is human-caused global warming (driven by our FF GHG emissions). Here's what all ocean phases (El Niño, La Niña and ENSO-NEUTRAL) are doing:

Kinda has me worried about how it will be when the ENSO is no longer doing the storm-disrupting wind shears and we have all this latent heat.

We're gonna get at least one badass storm next year, and we're absolutely not ready.

Is the ENSO period going to stay 3-7 years, get more annual, or will a new decadal rhythm kick in?
